Aston Villa Targets Leon Goretzka for Midfield Rebuild

Aston Villa are on the verge of landing Leon Goretzka on a free transfer, a move that would hand Unai Emery the kind of midfield authority he has been chasing all summer.

The Germany international is available after leaving Bayern Munich at the end of last season, and Villa have held positive talks with the 31-year-old over a move to Villa Park.

Emery’s need is obvious. Amadou Onana is out until next year with a knee injury suffered while on duty with Belgium at the World Cup, ripping a sizeable hole in the heart of Villa’s midfield. Goretzka, with his mix of power, timing and experience, fits the profile of an instant plug-in solution.

Villa had pushed to reunite Goretzka with his former Bayern team-mate Joao Palhinha, but the defensive midfielder is now expected to join Benfica instead. The focus has turned fully to Goretzka – and the opportunity is huge.

Eight years at Bayern.

312 appearances.

51 goals.

Goretzka arrives with a medal collection and a résumé that would transform most dressing rooms. He won seven Bundesliga titles and the Champions League in 2020 during a dominant spell in Munich, while on the international stage he has 73 caps for Germany and featured three times at this summer’s World Cup.

This is exactly the kind of experience Villa suddenly need.

Emery’s squad has been stripped of several key figures in a brutally busy window. Ezri Konsa left for Arsenal on Friday in a deal worth an initial £51m. Morgan Rogers has gone to Chelsea for £117m. Youri Tielemans departed for Manchester United in July, and Lucas Digne sealed a return to Paris St-Germain earlier this month.

That is a lot of know-how, and a lot of personality, walking out of the building.

Goretzka would walk in as one of the most decorated players in the squad, asked not just to play but to steady a side in transition. He would also arrive at a club still wrestling with uncertainty over its main striker.

Emery admitted on Friday that he cannot guarantee Ollie Watkins will remain at Villa Park beyond the transfer deadline, with strong interest from Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.

"We have an issue with him, it's clear. He is our player. We have had offers for him," Emery said. "I don't want to sell him but it can change because if it's a good option for him and the club and I can replace him in the squad, this is the routine we have and we did before with the players who are leaving."

That is the reality at Villa right now: big names leaving, big decisions looming, and a manager trying to keep his team competitive while the market swirls around him.

Securing Goretzka on a free would be a powerful response. A statement that, even as others cash in and move on, Villa still intend to load their midfield with Champions League calibre.

If Emery gets this one over the line, the question shifts quickly: who else will still be there to play alongside him when the window finally slams shut?
