Aston Villa Poised to Sign Leon Goretzka on Free Transfer
Aston Villa are closing in on a statement midfield signing, with Germany international Leon Goretzka poised to join on a free transfer.
The 31-year-old is available after leaving Bayern Munich in the summer and Villa have held what are understood to be positive talks with the midfielder, who is now weighing up a move to the Premier League.
Emery turns to serial winner after injury blow
Unai Emery has been forced back into the market after losing Amadou Onana until next year. The Belgian suffered a knee injury at the World Cup, ripping a sizeable hole in Villa’s midfield plans just as the season ramps up.
Villa initially pushed to reunite Goretzka with his former Bayern team-mate Joao Palhinha, but the Portuguese midfielder is now expected to join Benfica instead. With that door closing, Goretzka has quickly become the priority.
And what a résumé he brings.
Across eight years in Munich, Goretzka made 312 appearances and scored 51 goals, anchoring and driving a Bayern side that dominated domestically and conquered Europe. He lifted seven Bundesliga titles and the Champions League in 2020, while also amassing 73 caps for Germany and featuring three times at this summer’s World Cup.
If Villa get this over the line, they are not just adding depth. They are importing know-how from the sharp end of elite football.
Villa rebuild after high-profile exits
Emery needs it. Villa have been stripped of several key names in a turbulent summer.
Ezri Konsa left for Arsenal on Friday in a deal worth an initial £51m. Morgan Rogers followed the money and the project at Chelsea for £117m. Before them, Youri Tielemans departed for Manchester United in July, and Lucas Digne sealed a return to Paris St-Germain earlier this month.
That is a lot of experience, a lot of dressing-room presence, gone in a few weeks.
Goretzka, if he signs, would arrive as an instant leader in a squad that suddenly looks lighter on top-level pedigree.
Watkins future still in the balance
The uncertainty does not end there. Emery has already admitted he cannot guarantee that Ollie Watkins will still be at Villa Park when the transfer window closes, with Al-Hilal pushing to tempt the England striker to Saudi Arabia.
Speaking on Friday, Emery was blunt about the situation.
"We have an issue with him, it's clear. He is our player. We have had offers for him.
"I don't want to sell him but it can change because if it's a good option for him and the club and I can replace him in the squad, this is the routine we have and we did before with the players who are leaving."
That is the reality at Villa now: big bids, big decisions, constant recalculation.
Goretzka’s arrival would not solve every problem. But in a summer of exits and uncertainty, landing a Champions League winner in his prime would send a powerful message about where Emery still wants this team to go.
