Aston Villa hijack Liverpool’s long-term chase for PSG starlet Ibrahim Mbaye in €55m coup

Liverpool spent the summer keeping Ibrahim Mbaye warm as a fallback plan. Aston Villa have just walked in and taken him off the table.

For months, the 18-year-old Paris Saint-Germain winger sat near the top of Liverpool’s contingency list, a live option in case the club’s ambitious move for Bradley Barcola hit trouble. The idea was simple: if Barcola stalled, Mbaye was ready. Then Barcola’s deal finally cleared a major hurdle on Thursday – and the whole picture flipped.

With Liverpool given the green light for a £100 million move for Barcola, Villa struck. Fast.

The Midlands club, armed with fresh money from the sales of Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa and others, moved decisively to agree a €55 million ($64 million) fee with PSG for Mbaye in what ranks as one of the window’s more audacious Premier League raids. A player long tracked by Liverpool will now be wearing claret and blue.

The twist for Liverpool is obvious. Barcola’s switch to Merseyside “appears likely” but is not over the line. The forward is still awaiting a medical and formal confirmation. Any late hitch, any failed test or contractual snag, and the Reds will discover that the safety net they spent the summer stitching together has disappeared to Birmingham.

The Mbaye negotiations between Liverpool and PSG had already hit familiar turbulence. RMC Sport reported last week that the clubs were far apart on valuation, mirroring the early stand-off over Barcola. PSG saw Mbaye as closer to a £60 million ($82 million) asset. Liverpool’s internal view was nearer £43 million ($59 million).

In the end, Villa’s agreed €55 million fee lands almost exactly in Liverpool’s price range – but it will be Unai Emery, not Arne Slot, who benefits.

David Ornstein of The Athletic confirmed on Friday that Aston Villa had reached an agreement with PSG. This was not a pure smash-and-grab either. Villa have monitored the Senegal international since January, always hovering in the background of the race, rarely mentioned as front-runners. When the moment came, they were ready.

Mbaye’s rise has been rapid but carefully managed. He joined PSG in 2018 from FC Versailles 78, the same grassroots club that once helped launch Thierry Henry before his move to Monaco. Six years later, he broke into Luis Enrique’s first team in 2024 and stayed there, making 39 appearances for the two-time reigning Champions League winners.

At 16, he became the youngest player ever to start a competitive match for PSG. The record came with a glimpse of what was to follow: a direct, inventive right-winger, happy to take on defenders in tight spaces and fearless on big stages.

The world saw more of that at the 2026 World Cup. Mbaye was used as a rotation option for Senegal, but he still found his moment, scoring against France in the group stage. That goal, on that platform, accelerated the interest from Europe’s elite.

His omission from Enrique’s bench for PSG’s opening Ligue 1 game this season felt like a signal. With transfer noise growing louder, the club started to prepare for life without him. Now the destination is clear.

For Villa, Mbaye is another bold piece in a sweeping rebuild that began the moment they lifted the 2026 Europa League trophy. The squad that won in Europe has been broken up with striking ruthlessness. Rogers has gone to Manchester City, Konsa to Arsenal, Watkins to Al Hilal, Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, Emiliano Martinez to Chelsea, Lucas Digne to PSG, with Tammy Abraham expected to follow them out the door once his move to Ipswich Town is finalised.

In their place comes an almost entirely new core: Jordi Manzambi from Freiburg, Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea, Zion Suzuki from Parma, Joao Gomes from Wolves, Matteo Ruggeri from Atletico Madrid, Leon Goretzka from Bayern Munich, Aaron Wan-Bissaka from West Ham and more. Mbaye now joins that wave as the statement attacking signing, a high-ceiling wide forward to grow with a reshaped side.

For Liverpool, the calculation is harsher. They may yet unveil Barcola as the centrepiece of their summer, a £100 million answer to their long-term forward planning. But as they wait for the medical and the signatures, one thought will linger at Anfield.

If anything goes wrong, Ibrahim Mbaye is no longer an option. He will be stepping out at Villa Park instead.
