Aston Villa Signs PSG Starlet Ibrahim Mbaye, Outsmarts Liverpool
Aston Villa have struck a deal with Paris Saint-Germain to sign Ibrahim Mbaye, beating Liverpool to one of Europe’s most coveted teenage forwards.
The 18-year-old, long watched as a potential Mohamed Salah successor at Anfield, is on his way to the Premier League – just not to Merseyside.
Liverpool held talks over the right-winger this summer as they assessed options to eventually replace Salah. PSG, though, set a steep asking price. The French champions quoted the Reds around €70 million, a figure that was expected to be negotiable but still high enough for Liverpool to walk away rather than spend weeks locked in a drawn-out haggle.
Instead, Liverpool poured their efforts into landing their primary attacking target, Bradley Barcola. That decision opened the door for Villa, who had been circling Mbaye for months, to move decisively.
They didn’t hesitate.
Villa’s long game pays off
Villa’s interest in Mbaye dates back at least to January. Back then, PSG refused to entertain a sale, determined to keep hold of one of the brightest prospects from their production line.
The situation has shifted. After returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, Mbaye struggled for minutes in the second half of last season. With game time drying up and competition fierce in Paris, the Senegal international pushed for a new challenge and more regular football. This time, PSG were prepared to listen.
According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Villa have now agreed a €55 million fee with PSG, a deal smoothed by the strong relationship between PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris.
The transfer is in the final stages of being completed, with Mbaye expected to sign a long-term contract at Villa Park. For the Birmingham club, this is not an impulse buy. Ornstein’s report makes clear Mbaye has been a long-standing target, viewed internally as a key piece in their next phase under Unai Emery.
An 18-year-old with big-game scars
Mbaye is no raw unknown. At 18, he already has 42 senior appearances for PSG, a remarkable tally given the depth of talent in their squad. He has also represented Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations in the winter and at the World Cup this summer, gaining experience on two of the biggest stages in the sport before his 19th birthday.
That exposure has come at a cost. Once he returned from AFCON, his minutes in Paris shrank. With senior stars ahead of him in the pecking order, his path to regular starts narrowed, sharpening his desire to move.
Emery, keen to add another winger to his attacking arsenal, is expected to use Mbaye prominently. Villa’s high-tempo, front-foot style under the Spaniard offers a clear platform for a direct, dynamic wide forward to grow – and to play.
Leao doubts, Mbaye answers
Villa had also been exploring a move for AC Milan forward Rafael Leao in recent days. Talks took place, but the signals from the player’s camp pointed elsewhere. The Portuguese attacker is understood to favour Galatasaray, unconvinced by Villa’s contract proposal.
That setback could have left Villa scrambling.
Instead, the agreement for Mbaye has landed at exactly the right moment. A player they have admired for months, at a price below what Liverpool were quoted, and with a clear pathway into the starting XI.
Liverpool walk away, PSG cash in, and Villa step up. Now the question is simple: can an 18-year-old from Paris become the next headline act in Birmingham?
