Atalanta's Strong Start Sets Up Clash with Roma
Atalanta’s league season has opened at full throttle. Two games at the Gewiss Stadium, two wins, and already a place at the top of the table.
First came Sassuolo, swept aside in Bergamo as Atalanta immediately laid down a marker in front of their own fans. Then came Bologna, a far more stubborn opponent, pushed back only at the death. The Rossoblù held on deep into the match, but the resistance finally cracked almost at the last minute, when Samardzic struck the decisive blow to snatch victory and send Atalanta level with Roma at the summit.
It was the kind of late winner that does more than add three points. It injects belief. It sharpens focus. And it sets up the next clash perfectly.
Sarri sounds the alarm before Roma test
From the Zingonia training center, Maurizio Sarri cut a realistic, almost wary figure as he looked ahead to the showdown with the Giallorossi.
“Malen is in great form and will be a problem for the entire match,” he warned, underlining the threat his own defence will have to absorb. Preparation, he insisted, has followed the usual path, but the schedule is biting hard.
“We've prepared normally; we're the only team in Italy that plays five games in sixteen days tomorrow, but we're having a few issues. Our growth has undoubtedly slowed.”
That admission tells its own story. The legs are heavy, the margin for error shrinking. Yet the opponent waiting on the horizon offers no sympathy.
Sarri’s respect for Roma is clear and uncompromising. “They were strong and have become even stronger. They will fight for the Scudetto until the end, and I'd be surprised if the opposite happened.”
So Atalanta arrive in form, perfect at home and riding the high of Samardzic’s late strike. Roma stand alongside them at the top, armed with title ambitions Sarri openly acknowledges.
The early-season table already has a sharp edge. Now comes the question that will define the next stretch of this campaign: can Atalanta turn this blistering start into a sustained challenge against a Roma side built to go the distance?
