Atlético de Madrid Prepares for Key Clash Against Barcelona
The noise around Sunday’s clash with Barcelona is growing, but inside Atlético de Madrid’s training ground the message is stripped back and simple: win, and take control of LaLiga EA Sports.
Diego Simeone went into Friday’s session with almost everyone available. Almost. Cristian ‘Cuti’ Romero was the only player missing from the group, the sole injury absence as Atlético fine‑tune their plan for a game that could flip the title race on its head.
The centre-back’s absence leaves Simeone with one headache in an otherwise encouraging week. The rest of the squad trained under his eye as he edged closer to confirming his starting XI and the list of names that will go up on the dressing-room wall for Barcelona’s visit to the Metropolitano.
Good News in Midfield
There is good news in midfield. Morten Hjulmand and Johnny Cardoso are back, and that changes the picture for Atlético in the middle of the pitch.
Hjulmand returns after serving a suspension in the Champions League, punished for his sending-off against Stuttgart on the previous matchday. His absence was felt in Tuesday’s 0-2 defeat to Bayern Munich, when Atlético struggled to control long spells of the game and lacked their usual edge in duels.
Cardoso, meanwhile, has finally cleared a minor muscle problem that kept him out of three straight fixtures: against Deportivo de A Coruña, Levante and then Bayern. The American is now fully recovered and ready to be thrown back into the rotation at a moment when intensity and legs will decide details.
Simeone, never one to overplay an injury story, will still know that going into a top-of-the-table clash without Romero removes one option in a key area. The Argentine’s aggression and reading of the game would have suited a night that promises to be high on tension and low on space.
Context of the Clash
Even so, the context could hardly be bigger. Barcelona arrive in Madrid holding a two-point lead at the summit of LaLiga EA Sports. Atlético, roaring into the fixture on the back of seven consecutive league wins, see this as a chance to turn pressure into something far more tangible: first place.
The Metropolitano will feel it. A direct duel for the lead, two points between them, and a home side that has built real momentum domestically despite the midweek setback in Europe.
One more training session awaits on Saturday morning. After that, there will be nowhere left to hide. Just Barcelona, Atlético, a packed Metropolitano – and 90 minutes that could reshape the season.
