Atlético Madrid Firm on Julián Álvarez Transfer to Barcelona
Atlético Madrid have drawn a hard line in the sand. Barcelona want Julián Álvarez. Álvarez wants Barcelona. Atlético’s response? No talks. No compromise. No chance.
The club issued a strikingly firm statement on Thursday, making it clear they will not sit down with Barça over their 26-year-old striker under any circumstances.
“Atlético de Madrid is open to standard transfer market negotiations when conducted in a professional, ethical and respectful manner,” the club said. “We fully stand behind the club's previously communicated position that FC Barcelona failed to meet these requirements and, as a result, there will not be any negotiation and there is zero consideration of an Álvarez transfer to Barcelona.”
The message was as much for Barcelona as it was for their own player.
Álvarez, who did not train on Wednesday or Thursday, missed the sessions through illness after a bad night’s sleep on Tuesday, not because of any transfer wrangle. But his future dominates the agenda. He wants Barcelona, and president Joan Laporta publicly restated the Catalan club’s desire to sign him in an interview on Wednesday.
Atlético, though, have gone public in the opposite direction. This is a door being bolted in broad daylight.
They added: “Atlético de Madrid trust that our player will understand the decision and will remain focused on helping the club achieve its goals, just as he has done during the two seasons he has been defending our colours.”
The language reflects the anger inside the club. Speaking to Marca, Spain’s biggest sports newspaper, Atlético sources were even more blunt: “The player is being portrayed as the victim, but we are the only victims in this case. [Barcelona] have harmed us both financially and socially. There is a zero-per-cent chance of selling him to Barcelona – it's not about money, it's about dignity.”
That last word hangs over the entire saga.
London or Madrid – but not Barcelona
The situation around Álvarez has become “extremely tense”, according to Atlético expert and journalist Rubén Uría.
His public desire to leave has gone down badly. When Atlético drew 2-2 with Villarreal on Sunday, sections of the home support booed him off the pitch. A player once central to their plans now feels the chill of a fanbase turning away.
Those jeers have forced a rethink. Álvarez is now understood to be considering whether a move to Arsenal might be the right next step, with Barcelona effectively blocked.
Uría believes the choice has narrowed dramatically.
“My interpretation of the statement is that Atlético is making it public that it will not negotiate with Barcelona under any circumstances, and that this is not only the CEO's position, but also that of the club and, above all, its majority shareholder, Apollo, one of the largest private equity funds in the world,” he said.
“Absolute support. It's a clear message for Julián: ‘Either you go to London, or you stay. We will never negotiate with Barcelona.’ It's very clear, Julián decides. London or staying in Madrid.”
Two roads. One club ruled out.
Arsenal’s stance: interested, but unconvinced
From Arsenal’s side, the mood is cooler. Their position has not shifted despite the public drama in Spain.
They still see a deal for Álvarez as very unlikely before the deadline and would need clear, strong encouragement from the player himself to even begin formal negotiations with Atlético.
There is, however, a long-standing line of communication. Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta and Atlético CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín have been in regular dialogue throughout the summer. The pair know each other well from their time working together at Atlético and remain close.
For now, that relationship keeps the door ajar rather than flung open.
Atlético, aware that the story could still twist late in the window, are already working on contingency plans. They are exploring options for a new striker, and one of the names on their radar is Arsenal’s Viktor Gyökeres. The Spanish club want to understand how open Arsenal might be to selling the Sweden international.
Nicolás Jackson was also on their list, but he is heading to Aston Villa, removing one possible replacement from the board.
Inside Atlético, the next 24 to 48 hours are seen as decisive. They want clarity on Álvarez’s intentions – stay and repair his relationship with fans and club, or push hard for an exit. What they do not want is a saga that drags into the final day of the window.
Could Arsenal be a stepping stone?
South American football expert Tim Vickery framed the crossroads starkly when speaking on Sky Sports News.
“It is up to Atlético. They have two options: do they want to keep a player who doesn't want to be there? Or do they want to cash in?” he said.
“Clearly, they wouldn't sell to Barcelona and wouldn't sell to Real Madrid if they were interested. That does not leave them with many options; who else could afford him?
The other options are in the Premier League. I'm not sure he was wildly happy during his time in England. He has got himself in a place where there are not many options.
Arsenal, though, offer a compelling sporting project.
“Arsenal would give a fantastic narrative. Why not try to be part of the first Champions League at Arsenal? Why not be a part of that?” Vickery added. “And, depending on the terms of the contract, Arsenal could be a stepping stone to Barcelona. But it is up to Atlético.
“I am told that the fans would probably take him back if he has to go back to Atlético. He is a wonderful player, a striker with the soul of a midfielder.”
So the picture is brutally simple. Barcelona are out. Real Madrid are off the table. Atlético feel wounded and defiant. Arsenal are watching, waiting for a signal from the player.
For Julián Álvarez, the clock is ticking: repair the bond in Madrid, or gamble on London as the long road back to the Camp Nou dream.
