Atlético Madrid's Bold Promise to Julián Álvarez: Release Clause Reduction

Atlético Madrid have laid a bold marker down for Julián Álvarez – and for the clubs circling him.

The Spanish side have reportedly promised their Argentine forward that his release clause will be lowered next summer if he hits 20 goals this season, a pledge that could reshape his future and the market around him.

Álvarez is tied to Atlético until 2030 and, only a few months ago, he looked locked in. The club refused point-blank to negotiate with Barcelona during the last transfer window, shutting the door on a move despite the player making it clear he wanted out.

Spanish journalist Pipe Estrada revealed on "El Chiringuito" that chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has made a very specific promise to Álvarez.

According to Estrada, Gil Marín told the striker he would reduce the value of his release clause if he reaches the 20-goal mark this season. Right now, that clause stands at a towering 500 million euros – a sum that effectively slams the door on almost any realistic bid.

“Miguel Ángel Gil Marín promised Julián that he would lower the value of the release clause in his contract if he reaches 20 goals,” Estrada said on the programme.

A reduced clause would not just be a gesture. It would change the entire landscape around Álvarez, inviting serious offers where previously there were only rumours.

On the same show, journalists Jota Jordi and José Álvarez stopped short of fully endorsing the exact condition, but they did hint at something just as important: Atlético’s position on a potential sale is no longer immovable. The club that once refused to even sit at the table now appears willing, at least, to listen in the future.

From tension to praise

The promise comes after a turbulent spell between player and club. Reports in Spain describe a difficult period for Álvarez in the weeks after the transfer window closed, when frustration over his blocked move and his desire to leave collided with Atlético’s hard line.

Gradually, the atmosphere eased.

Álvarez’s attitude in training has drawn internal praise, and his standout performance against Liverpool at Anfield, even in defeat, seems to have shifted perceptions.
