Bangladesh Football Federation Adjusts Domestic Calendar Amid Registration Issues
The Bangladesh Football Federation has been forced to redraw its domestic calendar once more, with player registration issues at three heavyweight clubs again holding the entire league to ransom.
Bashundhara Kings, Abahani and Young Men's Fakirerpool Club have still not managed to overturn their FIFA-imposed registration bans, despite multiple extensions granted to give them time to resolve the situation. The clock has now run out.
So BFF has moved the goalposts.
New deadlines, new kickoff dates
In a letter to all participating clubs, the federation confirmed that the first-phase player registration for the 2026-27 Bangladesh Football League must be completed by September 3, 2026. No more extensions, no more leeway.
The domestic season, which was supposed to start on August 25, will now begin on September 18. That shift also knocks the Federation Cup off its original slot.
The Cup, initially slated to kick off on August 28, has been rescheduled to start on September 22, turning what should have been the curtain-raiser into a competition squeezed between international duty and league commitments.
Federation Cup on the road
BFF has kept the multi-venue approach. Federation Cup fixtures will be spread across Munshiganj, Manikganj, Gopalganj and the National Stadium in Dhaka, taking top-level football beyond the capital while still anchoring the showpiece at the country’s main arena.
The spread of venues adds colour to the competition. It also adds logistical strain in a calendar that is already tightening by the week.
National team squeezed into the gap
The international window from September 21 to October 6 looms large over all of this. BFF has ordered the national team camp to open on August 27, forcing clubs and coaches to juggle last-minute registrations, pre-season plans and player availability with the country’s international commitments.
League prep, cup fixtures and national duty will collide within a fortnight. Any misstep could ripple through the rest of the season.
Fortis FC’s continental detour
There is another twist. Fortis FC’s participation in the AFC Challenge League will carve out a fresh hole in the schedule.
The group stage of the continental competition is set for October 17 to 23 in Kuwait, meaning Fortis will step away from domestic action just as the league tries to find its rhythm.
BFF’s solution is blunt but clear: any Bangladesh Football League or Federation Cup matches involving Fortis will be played after the completion of the first phase of the league.
So the calendar bends again. The question now is simple: with bans, breaks and backlogs piling up, how long can Bangladeshi football keep reshaping its season before the whole structure starts to creak?
