Barcelona Cancels Tribute for Spain’s World Cup Winners Amid Political Tensions
Barcelona has officially called off the tribute for its eight players who won the World Cup with Spain. The celebration was scheduled before their La Liga match against Athletic Club but was canceled due to recent clashes between fans and police, which heightened political tensions around the club.
Rising Tensions at Camp Nou
The tribute was supposed to honor the eight squad members from Barcelona who helped Spain win the World Cup in New Jersey last month. Other Spanish clubs have already paid homage to their World Cup stars during recent home games. However, following a 5-0 win over Elche on Sunday, incidents involving traveling supporters and police intervention forced the club to reconsider the event.
During that match, fans carrying pro-independence Estelada flags were reportedly assaulted by authorities and had their flags confiscated. This aggressive response led Barcelona's management to cancel the pre-match ceremony ahead of their fixture with Athletic Club at Camp Nou.
Joan Laporta Addresses the Decision
Barcelona president Joan Laporta confirmed on Wednesday that the planned celebrations would not go ahead. He said the current atmosphere did not allow for such an event.
"The ceremony to honour the world champions will not take place because it is not the most appropriate context. The Royal Spanish Football Federation understands this decision," Laporta explained.
He also spoke out in defense of the fans’ right to display the Estelada flag, which symbolizes Catalan independence. Laporta emphasized football should unite people rather than cause division.
"The Estelada represents the mindset of many Barca supporters and Catalans. It is part of freedom of expression," he added.
Criticism of Police Conduct
Laporta strongly condemned the police’s treatment of supporters, calling the officers’ actions disproportionate.
"We reject the excessive force used by national police against Barca fans carrying the Estelada before the Elche game. We demand appropriate sanctions once the facts are confirmed," he stated.
He urged for better protection so that Catalan supporters can express themselves without fear of violence or discrimination.
"We hope punishments will ensure Catalans and Barca fans can carry the flag without fear of harm or stigmatization by state security forces," Laporta concluded.
Focus Shifts Back to Football
Despite the controversy off the field, Barcelona now turns its attention back to La Liga action. They will host Athletic Club on Thursday evening without the previously planned tribute.
The team aims to keep their momentum going after the strong performance against Elche while navigating the ongoing political challenges surrounding the club.
