Barcelona Maintains Contact with Rashford as United Faces Tough Decision
Barcelona have not walked away from Marcus Rashford. Far from it.
The Spanish club remain in contact with the forward’s representatives as they test the limits of what could yet become one of the most dramatic late twists of the transfer window: Rashford leaving Manchester United again, and heading back to Camp Nou.
This, remember, after Barcelona chose not to trigger their €30million (£26m, $35m) option to buy him permanently at the end of last season, despite a campaign in which he produced 28 goal contributions across all competitions.
Loan dream vs United reality
Barcelona’s stance then was clear. They preferred another loan. Rashford still had two years left on his United deal, and the Catalan club wanted flexibility, not a full commitment.
United’s message was just as firm. No more loans. If Rashford was to go, it would be on a permanent basis only.
So he returned.
Back at Old Trafford this summer, Rashford has rejoined the first-team group and is once again pulling on United colours for the first time in 18 months. Internally, he is no fringe figure either: he is the club’s highest-paid player, and Michael Carrick and his staff have brought him fully back into the fold, open to using him this season.
That does not mean the story is over.
Window still open, door not closed
There is still a live possibility that Rashford moves on before the window shuts, and Barcelona remain firmly in the conversation.
Other clubs have sounded out his camp, but the financial reality is brutal. Only a small handful of teams can realistically take on the wages and package required to sign an England international of his profile. Barcelona are one of those.
Contacts between the Catalan side and Rashford’s representatives have not dried up. The player, for his part, would welcome a return to Catalunya. The key question sits with United: would they soften their stance and accept a loan, even one with an obligation to buy? Right now, that remains unclear.
Barcelona’s attack in flux
Barcelona’s need up front has only sharpened since last season ended. Rashford has gone back to England. Robert Lewandowski has departed. Ferran Torres has also moved on. Roony Bardghji, signed with high hopes, is out for the season through injury.
Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi have arrived to inject pace and energy, but the rebuild is unfinished. The club are still working the market, still juggling options, and that is why the Rashford line has stayed open.
Complicating everything is their pursuit of Julian Alvarez.
Barcelona continue to work on a deal for the Argentina international, yet Atletico Madrid have stood firm with a blunt message: not for sale. Repeatedly. The stalemate has boxed Barcelona in, limiting their freedom to reshape the attack as they would like.
If that deadlock holds, Rashford’s name does not drift away. It moves closer to the centre of the conversation.
United’s dilemma
From United’s side, the equation is far from simple.
They have brought Rashford back into the squad and, for now, are prepared to carry one of the heaviest wage commitments in the Premier League. On the pitch, he offers goals, experience and a player who knows the club inside out.
Behind the scenes, though, there is debate. Is this the best long-term use of resources? If Barcelona – or any other elite club – put forward a proposal that makes financial sense, does that change the calculation?
For the moment, Rashford is a Manchester United player. He trains, he competes, he is part of Carrick’s plans.
Barcelona, though, have kept the line open and the door ajar. With the window ticking down and their attack still unsettled, the question lingers: how long can United resist if the right offer finally lands on the table?
