Barcelona's New Era Under Hansi Flick: Squad Insights for Elche Match

Barcelona open the Hansi Flick era on the road, and there is no easing into it. A new La Liga season starts with a trip to Elche on Sunday, and the first squad list of the campaign already carries a few clear signals about where this team is heading.

Flick’s first list: youth, new blood, and a few absences

Hansi Flick has named 23 players for the opener, with three goalkeepers in the travelling party: Joan Garcia, Wojciech Szczesny and Eder Aller.

In front of them, the defensive group blends established names with fresh faces: João Cancelo, Alejandro Balde, Pau Cubarsí, Xavi Espart, Andreas Christensen, Gerard Martín, Jules Kounde and Eric Garcia all make the cut.

Midfield, as ever at Barcelona, will be under the microscope. Flick has called up Fermín López, Pedri, new signing Rodri, Dani Olmo, Marc Bernal and Brian Fariñas.

Up top, the attacking options are Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Karim Adeyemi, Anthony Gordon and Hamza Abdelkarim.

The headline is simple: Rodri is in. The new arrival receives his first official call-up and is expected to make his debut off the bench in the second half, a potentially intriguing first glimpse of how Flick wants to shape the middle of the pitch.

Alejandro Balde’s inclusion also matters. Left out at the weekend amid uncertainty over his future, he returns to the squad and immediately gives Barcelona more thrust and width on the flank.

On the other side of the ledger, Marc Casadó, Álvaro Cortés and Héctor Fort are omitted as they move closer to exits from the club. Those decisions clear space in the pecking order and underline the sense of a reset under the new coach.

Injury problems haven’t gone away. Gavi (knee), Frenkie de Jong (knee) and Roony Bardghji (knee) all miss out, stripping Flick of three major options and forcing early improvisation in midfield and attack.

How Barcelona could line up

The expectation is a 4-3-3 from Flick, a shape that suits both the club’s tradition and several of his key players. The predicted XI:

Joan; Eric, Cubarsí, Martín, Espart; Fermín, Bernal, Pedri; Yamal, Raphinha, Adeyemi.

That setup leans heavily on youth. Cubarsí anchoring the back line, Pedri orchestrating in midfield, Lamine Yamal given the freedom to attack from the right, and Karim Adeyemi offering pace and direct running up front. It’s a bold spine for an opening-day trip.

The bench, though, carries experience and variety: Cancelo’s versatility, Christensen’s calm, Balde’s energy, Olmo’s creativity, Gordon’s work rate and the unknown quantity of Rodri’s debut minutes.

All eyes on Elche

Kick-off is set for 9pm CET in Barcelona (8pm BST/WAT, 3pm ET, 12pm PT, 12.30am IST on Friday). A new coach, a reshaped squad, a first away test.
