Barcelona Focuses on Julián Álvarez Amid Raphinha's Striker Success
Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are still trading blows over Julián Álvarez. One side won’t stop calling. The other won’t even pick up.
The Catalan club remain fixated on the Argentine forward, but Atletico refuse to entertain negotiations. The standoff has dragged on long enough that it now feels personal, a tug of war with no rope in sight.
Spanish newspaper El País reports that, inside Barcelona, the mood is calmer than the noise suggests. Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco had already reached a clear conclusion: if Álvarez or Inter’s Lautaro Martínez could not be signed, there was no point scouring the market for a Plan C. In their eyes, no available striker would improve what they already had.
They went hard for Álvarez and still are, a pursuit that has irritated Atletico. Deco even tested the waters with Inter over Lautaro, only to quickly realise there was no deal to be done in Milan. That door shut almost as soon as it opened.
So Barcelona turned inward. And Raphinha stepped forward.
Raphinha the reluctant No 9
Flick and Deco were not exactly relaxed, but they were far from panicking. Raphinha, a winger by trade, was pushed into the role of out‑and‑out striker in the league opener against Elche. He didn’t just cope. He scored twice.
Any sense of experiment faded fast.
Next came Athletic Bilbao. Same central role, same conviction, another goal. Three strikes in two games from a player supposedly filling in for the star signing that never arrived.
Flick made his stance clear when asked about the Brazilian’s position:
“I do not care in which position Raphinha plays, what matters to me is what he shows on the pitch. The fans connect with him and with the team. We have a great atmosphere, and that is the most important thing. What matters is how the press begins.”
The message was obvious. Systems, chalkboards, labels – they can all wait. Raphinha is delivering, the team is winning, and the crowd is buying into it.
Flick shuts down Álvarez talk
All of that leaves the Álvarez chase looking increasingly like background noise.
“It looks like Barcelona won’t land Álvarez,” noted El País, and Flick did nothing to change that perception.
Pressed on the saga, the coach refused to bite:
“I do not want to comment on matters of this kind. We won our second match in a row, and that is what matters to me.”
Two games, two wins, goals flowing from a makeshift centre-forward. The internal logic is hard to argue with. If Barcelona are in a fight with Atletico, it is now more about pride than necessity.
Rodri, the quiet arrival
Without Julián Álvarez, the headline summer addition remains Rodri. No grand unveiling overshadowed by transfer sagas, just a player walking into the Camp Nou and earning applause on the pitch.
According to El País, the crowd responded warmly to him in Barcelona’s latest home outing, a sign that not every new face needs a blockbuster fee or a drawn-out battle to be embraced.
Barcelona still want Álvarez. Atletico still refuse to engage. But with Raphinha scoring through the middle and Rodri already winning over the stands, how long before the club’s obsession with a marquee No 9 starts to feel like yesterday’s problem?
