Barcelona's Mystery Centre-Back Hunt: Lukeba and Inacio Ruled Out

Barcelona’s search for a left-footed centre-back has taken another sharp turn, and two of the most talked‑about names are now off the table.

Transfer specialist Matteo Moretto has made it clear: Castello Lukeba and Goncalo Inacio are not the players Barça are working to sign.

A key profile for Flick – but not the obvious names

The club’s sporting department has been pushing for a left-footed defender, a specific profile considered important to reshape the back line and hand Hansi Flick a natural option on that side of defence.

Reports had suggested Barcelona were moving quietly, trying to keep the operation away from the usual transfer noise. Moretto then dropped the main clue: the defender they are targeting does not play in Spain and is not a name that casual fans would instantly recognise.

That description immediately dragged Castello Lukeba into the debate.

The RB Leipzig defender has been followed by Barcelona, and Flick is known to appreciate the Frenchman’s ability to operate both as a centre-back and as a left-back. On paper, he ticks a lot of boxes.

But this is where the trail goes cold.

Lukeba ruled out “100%”

Despite his qualities and the previous links, Lukeba is not the player Barça are trying to bring in.

Moretto has shut that door completely, ruling out the Leipzig defender’s profile “100%” and killing off the idea that the 23-year-old is the mystery left-footed signing in the works.

It’s not for lack of fit. Lukeba’s versatility would allow him to cover several positions across the defensive line, and his comfort on the left side matches exactly the area Barcelona are trying to reinforce. He looks like the obvious solution.

But that is precisely the point: Barcelona are not shopping from the obvious shelf.

The current search is clearly pointing elsewhere, towards a defender who is operating under a far lower spotlight. The club’s recruitment team seems intent on finding a different, less high-profile profile rather than simply joining the race for the headline names already circulating in the market.

Inacio also scratched from the list

The same story applies to Goncalo Inacio.

The Sporting CP centre-back has been repeatedly mentioned as another candidate in Barça’s hunt for a left-footed defender. Yet Moretto’s latest information suggests the Portuguese international can also be crossed out.

The key detail here is recognition.

According to the journalist, the player Barcelona are actively working on is less widely known than both Lukeba and Inacio. That would explain the silence: almost no credible speculation has emerged about the identity of the defender so far because he simply isn’t a regular in the rumour mill.

Barcelona, for their part, appear determined to keep it that way. The operation is being handled under tight wraps as they push for a deal with a defender who, at least for now, sits outside the obvious candidates.

The big names are out. The mystery remains.
