Defensive audit
Barcelona’s 4-2-3-1 defended with clear lateral roles. On the right, João Cancelo started as the right back in the second line with Lamine Yamal ahead of him, while Eric García began on the right of the centre-back pair before being replaced by Ronald Araújo on 22 minutes. On the left, Gerard Martín and Pau Cubarsí formed the rest of the back four, with Raphinha nominally from the left side of the advanced midfield line but constantly driving inside to help the press.
Joan García was the starting goalkeeper, later replaced by Wojciech Szczęsny on 82 minutes. Barcelona saw 3 of their attempts blocked by the opposition, but the structure behind the ball was strong enough that Newcastle were limited to just 8 total shots and 5 on target. The double-digit scoreline owed a lot to how high Barcelona’s defensive line held, compressing play into Newcastle’s half and turning losses of possession into immediate counter-pressing.
Newcastle’s 4-3-3 back line had Kieran Trippier on the right, Malick Thiaw and Dan Burn centrally, and Lewis Hall on the left, with Aaron Ramsdale in goal. Once Trippier went off for Valentino Livramento at 46 minutes, the right side lost its main organiser, and with Newcastle seeing only 1 of their attempts blocked by Barcelona, it underlined how rarely they were able to sustain pressure in the final third.
Engine room and attacking structure
Barcelona’s midfield unit of Marc Bernal and Pedri controlled the tempo, supported by the advanced trio of Lamine Yamal, Fermín López and Raphinha behind Robert Lewandowski. Bernal’s early goal on 18 minutes, assisted by Gerard Martín, came from second-line occupation and a quick vertical release after regaining possession.
All substitutions and their minutes for Barcelona:

- 66': Robert Lewandowski off, Ferran Torres on
- 66': João Cancelo off, Xavi Espart on
- 67': Fermín off, Dani Olmo on

- 55': Sandro Tonali off, Joe Willock on
- 64': Joelinton off, Sven Botman on
- 64': Anthony Elanga off, Jacob Murphy on
- 81': Anthony Gordon off, William Osula on
Barcelona’s main creative hubs were Raphinha and Lamine Yamal. Raphinha opened the scoring on 6 minutes from a Fermín assist, then turned provider for Fermín on 51 minutes and Lewandowski on 56 minutes, before adding a late solo goal on 72 minutes. Lamine Yamal converted the penalty at 45 minutes and later assisted Lewandowski’s second on 61 minutes. With 63 percent possession, 18 total shots and 452 passes at 87 percent accuracy, Barcelona constantly flooded the half spaces, dragging Newcastle’s midfield three of Jacob Ramsey, Joelinton and Sandro Tonali out of shape.
Newcastle’s threat came almost exclusively from Anthony Elanga’s runs in behind, scoring twice (15 and 28 minutes) from Lewis Hall and Harvey Barnes assists, but the visitors lacked central support once Barcelona tightened their rest defence.
Verdict
Barcelona’s 7-2 win in this UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie was the product of territorial dominance, an aggressive high line and a midfield that consistently arrived between Newcastle’s lines. The right-sided combinations and repeated central overloads overwhelmed Newcastle’s 4-3-3, and the visitors’ substitutions could not restore compactness or possession control.
