Barcelona Secure Permanent Signing of Joao Cancelo
Barcelona have finally got what they’ve been chasing for more than a year: Joao Cancelo, not as a short-term fix, but as their player, on their terms.
The Catalan club confirmed the Portuguese full-back’s arrival with a flurry of posts on its official X account, drawing a line under a long, winding negotiation process that has followed Cancelo across three different employers.
This time, it’s permanent.
The 32-year-old has signed a three-year contract that ties him to Barcelona until 2029, extending his stay at Spotify Camp Nou deep into the club’s next cycle. It is Cancelo’s third spell in Blaugrana colours, but the first not framed by a loan agreement.
He first landed in Barcelona on loan from Manchester City for the 2023-24 season, then returned again on a temporary deal from Al-Hilal for the second half of last season. Across that season and a half, he became a regular fixture: 65 appearances in all competitions, six goals, nine assists, and a key role in last season’s La Liga title win.
The transfer closes an unusual chapter in his career. Earlier reports had indicated Cancelo would arrive on a free after reaching an agreement with Al-Hilal to terminate his contract, with the player waiving the remainder of his dues to force an exit.
He leaves the Saudi club after two seasons on their books since the summer of 2024, though he actually played just one of them, having been cut from the domestic squad last term. On the pitch, his numbers were strong if unrewarded: 45 games in all competitions, three goals, 14 assists, but not a single trophy to show for it.
Barcelona now believe they are the ones who will fully capitalise on his output.
Cancelo slots in as the fifth signing of a busy summer window, joining England’s Anthony Gordon, Germany’s Karim Adeyemi, Spain’s Rodri and Belgium’s Jesse Bisiou. The club have also made permanent the deal for young Egyptian forward Hamza Abdelkarim by activating his purchase clause.
A familiar face, a new contract, and a clear message: Barcelona’s rebuild on the flanks is no longer temporary.
