Barcelona pursue Julian Alvarez as Arsenal, PSG, Chelsea compete
Barcelona are pushing hard to make Julian Alvarez their marquee signing, but Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain are refusing to move out of the way in what is fast becoming one of the defining transfer battles of the summer.
The Argentine forward and his camp made their decision over Christmas: he wants a move at the end of the season. From that point, talks quietly began with Europe’s elite, a process first revealed in January.
Through it all, Alvarez has placed Barcelona at the top of his list. The Catalan club have been treated as his preferred destination, and every other suitor has been reminded of that more than once.
That has not scared anyone off.
PSG remain heavily involved. Arsenal are fully engaged. Chelsea, despite the handicap of no Champions League football, are still in the race and, according to sources, cannot be discounted.
Barcelona in pole, but on a tightrope
Agents and intermediaries working with Alvarez are now deep in negotiations with Barcelona. The message to the club has been blunt: this will not become a drawn-out saga.
Alvarez is open to Paris. He is open to London. Those close to the deal have stressed that leaving Spain is “not a hollow threat”. That stance has kept talks alive with PSG, Arsenal and Chelsea, and it has cranked up the pressure on Barca’s already strained finances.
Barcelona’s problem is simple: price.
Atletico Madrid’s initial demands sit at around €120 million (£102m / $140m). That figure is seen as beyond Barcelona’s summer budget. The Catalans want to get creative, aiming to keep any fee under €100m and exploring the possibility of including players to bring the cost down.
Arsenal, Chelsea and PSG are not interested in that kind of complexity. All three are ready to put straight cash on the table.
Arsenal’s pitch: Alvarez through the middle
Arsenal have gone a step further in their charm offensive. They have told Alvarez directly that he would be used in his preferred central role.
Initially, the London club viewed him as a solution for their left-sided attacking slot. Alvarez pushed back. He wants to play through the middle, and he made that clear. Arsenal did not flinch. Their interest has not cooled, and their willingness to reshape plans for him underlines how highly they rate the former Manchester City man.
PSG, meanwhile, see Alvarez as a statement signing in attack as they look to reinforce their frontline again. Chelsea, rebuilding and recalibrating, know that landing a player of his calibre could accelerate their project, even without Champions League football to offer.
Atletico’s stance: sell abroad, not to Barca
Inside Atletico, the situation is well understood. Speaking before the first leg of their Champions League semi-final with Arsenal, Diego Simeone acknowledged the scale of the interest.
“I’m not inside Julian Alvarez’s head. But it’s normal that an extraordinary player like Julian Alvarez is wanted by Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona,” he said in his pre-match press conference.
Atletico’s preference is clear. If they have to sell, they would much rather send Alvarez outside Spain than strengthen a direct domestic rival. Straight cash offers from Arsenal, Chelsea and PSG fit that strategy far better than a discounted, player-included deal with Barcelona.
The Madrid club still want to keep him. To do that, Alvarez would have to reverse his decision in the coming weeks and commit to staying. If he doesn’t, a move is on the cards – and a return to England remains firmly in play.
