Barcelona Signs Rodri from Manchester City for £65m

Barcelona have pulled off one of the headline moves of the summer, sealing the signing of Rodri from Manchester City in a deal worth around £65m.

The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner has signed a four-year contract at the Nou Camp, taking him back to La Liga and to Spanish football for the first time since he left Atletico Madrid in 2019.

End of an era at City

Rodri, now 30, walks away from Manchester after seven seasons that reshaped the club’s midfield and trophy cabinet. He made 298 appearances and collected 12 major honours: four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three EFL Cups and, crowning it all, the Champions League in 2023.

Injuries disrupted his final two campaigns in England, slowing the metronome that had driven Pep Guardiola’s side for so long. But he roared back this summer on the biggest stage of all. At the World Cup, Rodri dominated tournaments and headlines alike, finishing as player of the tournament as Spain lifted the trophy for the second time in their history.

His farewell message to City supporters underlined how deep the bond had become.

"I am leaving the club with a huge sense of pride about what we have achieved and gratitude too for so many amazing memories.

"What we have done together in these years is something both very special and unforgettable.

"City didn't just make me grow as a player. They made me grow as a human. I saw my brother graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University. I could see my girlfriend working for the NHS. Manchester shaped my whole life."

Contract stand-off opens the door

Rodri was heading into the final 12 months of the contract he signed in 2022. City wanted him to stay. Talks took place, but no extension followed, and the situation flicked a green light for Europe’s elite.

Real Madrid initially looked in pole position. The idea of a former Atletico midfielder crossing that divide carries its own drama, and Rodri himself had spoken about the possibility when asked on Spanish radio in March.

"There are more players who have taken that path. Not directly, but over time. You can't turn down the best clubs in the world," he said then.

Real Madrid’s interest faded. Barcelona’s did not.

Sources told BBC Sport that Barcelona had Rodri’s approval to open negotiations with City. Their first bid of £38.5m was knocked back, but the Catalan club came back again. This time, they went far higher, and an agreement was finally struck at a figure well beyond that opening offer.

A dream move to the Nou Camp

On Monday, Rodri flew into Barcelona. Cameras and microphones were waiting. So were the obvious questions.

He did not hide what this meant to him. Playing for Barcelona, he said at the airport, is a "dream".

For City, it is the end of a hugely successful chapter. For Barcelona, it is a declaration of intent: the heartbeat of Spain’s World Cup-winning side, now tasked with dictating the rhythm at the Nou Camp for the next four years.
