Barcelona's Bardghji Suffers Second ACL Tear
Barcelona’s summer planning took a brutal turn on Tuesday as the club confirmed that winger Bardghji has torn the ACL in his right knee, a serious injury that instantly shut down any prospect of a move before the transfer window closes on September 1.
The 20-year-old Sweden international suffered the injury during training on Monday. Tests carried out by the club’s medical staff revealed the full extent of the damage and confirmed he will need surgery in the coming days, with a lengthy spell on the sidelines to follow.
It comes at the worst possible moment for the forward. Bardghji had been preparing to leave Barcelona this summer after talks with club management, who made it clear that opportunities would be scarce in the upcoming season.
Flick’s blunt message, cruel timing
Just days before the injury, coach Flick had spoken openly with Bardghji about his situation. According to ESPN, the German told the youngster that first-team minutes would be extremely hard to find at Barça this year and that he should look for a new club.
Barcelona even tried to shield him from exactly this kind of setback. Bardghji was deliberately left out of the squad for Saturday’s friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese to reduce the risk of injury while transfer negotiations were expected to advance.
The plan backfired in the harshest way. He avoided the matches, but not the training ground. The ACL tear arrived on Monday, just as interest from across Europe — including the Premier League — was beginning to build and talks were poised to accelerate.
Second major knee blow
This is not Bardghji’s first encounter with this particular nightmare. It is the second time he has torn the ACL in his right knee, having suffered the same serious injury while playing for Copenhagen in 2024.
Barcelona signed him from the Danish club last summer in a deal worth around €2 million. In his debut campaign in Spain, he made 28 appearances in all competitions and scored two goals, most of those minutes coming from the bench rather than as a starter.
His path into the team was already narrowing. The arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi this summer pushed him further down the pecking order in the forward line, reinforcing the idea that a transfer was the logical next step for his career.
Window shuts, door closes
Now that option has disappeared. With the transfer window shutting on September 1, the severity of the injury effectively ends any chance of a move for Bardghji in this market. No club will commit to a long-term deal while he faces months of recovery.
The winger will undergo surgery shortly and then begin a long rehabilitation process in Barcelona. Instead of using this season to relaunch his career elsewhere, he will spend it working back to fitness at the club’s facilities, trying to conquer a second major knee injury before his career has truly taken off.
The question now is not where Bardghji will play next, but how strongly he can come back from another brutal setback at just 20 years of age.
