Bardghji's Second ACL Tear Disrupts Barcelona Transfer Plans

Barcelona’s summer plans took a brutal twist on Tuesday as the club confirmed that winger Bardghji has torn the ACL in his right knee, a devastating injury that wipes out any chance of a move before the transfer window shuts on September 1.

The 20-year-old Sweden international went down during training on Monday. Initial fears were quickly confirmed by medical tests: a severe ligament tear, surgery required in the coming days, and a long spell out of action ahead.

For Bardghji, the timing could hardly be worse. He had been preparing for a fresh start away from Barcelona after talks with club management, who had made it clear that minutes would be scarce this season.

Told to leave, injured before he could

In the days leading up to the injury, coach Hansi Flick had spoken openly with Bardghji, advising him to look for a new club. According to ESPN, Flick was honest about the situation: breaking into the first team in the upcoming campaign would be extremely difficult.

To avoid exactly this kind of nightmare scenario, Barcelona had kept him out of Saturday’s friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese. The idea was simple: protect an outgoing player from unnecessary risk while transfer discussions gathered pace.

Then came Monday’s training session. One wrong movement, and everything changed.

European interest put on hold

Barcelona had already received enquiries from several clubs across Europe, including sides from the Premier League. With the window edging towards its final weeks, talks were expected to intensify as teams looked to finalise their attacking options.

That momentum has stopped dead. The ACL tear effectively closes the market for Bardghji this summer. No club will move for a player now facing months of rehabilitation and a second major operation on the same knee.

Second ACL blow in same knee

This is not new territory for Bardghji, which makes the news even harsher. He previously tore the ACL in his right knee while playing for Copenhagen in 2024, suffering the exact same serious injury.

Barcelona signed him last summer from the Danish club in a deal worth around €2 million. His first season in Spain brought 28 appearances in all competitions and two goals, but he struggled to establish himself as a regular starter. Most of his minutes came from the bench, a role that was only likely to shrink.

The club’s summer business underlined that reality. The arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi pushed Bardghji further down the pecking order, leaving a transfer as the logical next step in his development.

Now that path is gone, at least for a year.

Season lost, recovery ahead

With the window closing on September 1, there is no realistic scenario in which Bardghji leaves Camp Nou this summer. He will undergo surgery in the coming days and begin a lengthy rehabilitation process in Barcelona, with his entire 2024–25 campaign effectively written off before it starts.

Instead of fighting for a place or showcasing himself for a move, the 20-year-old will spend the season in the gym and treatment room, trying to rebuild the same knee for a second time.

For a young winger once earmarked for a breakout move, the question now is no longer which club he joins next, but how strongly he can come back from another major setback.
