Jeff Bezos-Backed Consortium Close to Acquiring One-Third Stake in Liverpool FC

Reports indicate that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is part of a group nearing an agreement to purchase about one-third ownership in Premier League club Liverpool FC. The investor group is led by Amit Bhatia, known as the son-in-law of Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, and also features Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG), current owners of Liverpool, confirmed last month that Bhatia's consortium has approached them with interest in a minority investment. A spokesperson for FSG told AFP, "An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club."

Bhatia was previously a shareholder in Queens Park Rangers, a Championship club. According to Sky News, the deal to acquire nearly one-third of Liverpool is close, with FSG expected to announce the outcome potentially this week.

Details on Investors and Club Valuation

  • Jeff Bezos is estimated by Forbes to have a net worth exceeding $280 billion.
  • Eduardo Saverin's wealth is valued around $33 billion.

Bezos has reportedly considered bids for NFL teams such as the Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders but chose not to pursue those deals. This Liverpool investment would be part of growing American financial involvement in the Premier League and might value the club at approximately $6 billion.

FSG acquired Liverpool back in 2010 for £300 million ($405 million). Recently, in 2023, they sold a minority stake to the US private equity firm Dynasty Equity.

Recent Liverpool Context

Liverpool FC secured the Premier League title in the 2024/25 season under manager Arne Slot. Despite that success, Slot was dismissed in May following a difficult season's end.
