Francesco Totti Reveals Offers from Top Leagues at Age 48 but Declined

It sounds unbelievable, yet Francesco Totti, the 2006 World Cup winner, confirmed he received offers from Serie A clubs in 2024, when he was already 48 years old. Despite retiring in 2017, some teams showed interest in bringing him back on the pitch.

Offers from Genoa and Como

Totti disclosed he turned down approaches from both Genoa and Como. Genoa's coach, Alberto Gilardino, another 2006 Italian champion, was 42 at the time. Como's bench included Cesc Fàbregas, who was 37. Totti pointed out that he would have been older by six and eleven years respectively than those expected to instruct him. "These are not fairy tales, this is the plain truth," he remarked in his autobiography Oltre, as quoted by Corriere della Sera.

Training and Lifestyle Changes

Before making a final decision, Totti resumed training and adjusted his diet drastically—eliminating bread and sweets. He admitted giving up sugary treats was particularly tough. Physically, he felt surprisingly good during workouts, only experiencing typical aches one might expect nearing 50. Mentally, though, he battled conflicting feelings about returning.

"My head said I could say yes, my heart said no. Then the roles reversed: my thoughts put on the brakes and my pulse sped up," Totti reflected.

Love for Roma Prevented the Comeback

The ultimate reason for rejecting the offers wasn’t age, but loyalty. Totti asked himself if he could truly play for any club other than Roma, the team with which he spent his entire career. The answer was no. He described it as a form of sporting betrayal that applies regardless of age.

"Roma was the deciding factor. Not the problem—it never will be. Sporting betrayal knows no age, whether you are 18 or 48," Totti explained.
