Birmingham City Appoints John Murtough as Director of Football

Birmingham City have turned to a figure forged in the heat of Old Trafford to steer their football operation, appointing former Manchester United chief John Murtough as director of football.

The 55-year-old, who left United in April 2024 after 11 years at the club, steps into the role vacated by Craig Gardner, who departed St Andrew’s in June. It is a significant move from the US ownership, a clear signal that a promotion push will be built on heavyweight experience rather than hopeful improvisation.

This is not a left-field appointment. Murtough’s CV runs through some of English football’s most established institutions. Before joining Manchester United in 2013, he worked at Everton, Fulham and Coventry City, and also held a role with the Premier League itself. Most recently he has been in Serie A, serving as director of global development at Atalanta, a club widely praised for smart recruitment and shrewd squad building.

Now the focus of that expertise shifts to the Championship. Murtough will officially begin work on Monday, once Birmingham’s weekend trip to Cardiff City is out of the way. He walks into a club in motion, not in crisis.

Blues sit fourth in the Championship after three straight wins since the international break under head coach Chris Davies. The mood around St Andrew’s has changed quickly: from anxiety after relegation to a sense that something coherent is taking shape. Results have given the project credibility. This appointment gives it structure.

The timing feels deliberate. With the season settling into its rhythm and the January window already looming on the horizon, Birmingham now have a seasoned operator in place to align recruitment, strategy and the ambitions of an ownership group that has not been shy about its intentions.

For Murtough, it is a very different stage from Manchester United, but one where his decisions could be felt even more sharply. In the Championship, a smart signing or a bold sale can tilt an entire season. Birmingham have handed him that responsibility.

He starts on Monday. The table, and the opportunity, are already waiting.
