Blues Fitness Concerns Ahead of South Coast Clash
The Blues head to the south coast on Tuesday night juggling fitness concerns and flickers of optimism, with key calls still to be made on several fronts.
Joao faces race against time
Up front, the big question hangs over Joao. The striker missed the weekend’s home defeat to Manchester United with an injury and is still not guaranteed to face his former club.
He trained on the grass at Cobham, which offers a glimmer of hope, but Liam Rosenior made it clear the decision will go right to the wire. The medical staff will assess him again on Tuesday morning before any final call is made. For a player with history against the opposition, his availability could change the entire complexion of the night.
Estevao ruled out, Enzo cleared
There is no such uncertainty around Estevao Willian. His race for this game is already run.
Forced off against United with a hamstring problem, the young winger will not travel. The club are running further tests to understand the full extent of the damage, and the tone around his absence carries real disappointment. He had been building rhythm; now he has to stop cold.
Enzo Fernandez, though, has dodged that kind of setback. The midfielder, who came off at the weekend with a calf issue, has been cleared to play. Rosenior confirmed he is “absolutely fine” and available, a significant boost in a congested spell where legs and lungs are being pushed hard.
Beyond that, there are no fresh concerns. The rest of the squad has come through the quick turnaround from Saturday intact, a small victory in itself at this stage of the season.
Colwill steps back into the frame
At the back, there is a longer story quietly turning in the Blues’ favour.
Levi Colwill has rejoined full team training after a serious knee injury that has kept him out for a substantial stretch. He has already banked 60 minutes for the Under-21s, a low-intensity outing but a crucial checkpoint in his recovery.
The plan is clear: another run-out for the Under-21s on Saturday, more minutes, more trust in the knee, more sharpness. Rosenior refuses to rush him, but he does not hide his belief that Colwill can still play a part before the season closes.
The defender has already made his presence felt on the training pitch, his personality and authority seeping back into the group. If his rehab continues on this trajectory, the Blues could yet welcome back a major piece of their defensive future just in time for the run-in.
