Brazil Secures Top Spot in Group C with 3-0 Win Over Scotland
Gabriel Magalhaes went the distance and walked away with another clean sheet as Brazil swept aside Scotland 3-0 to seal top spot in Group C at the World Cup.
The Arsenal defender, ever-present at the heart of Carlo Ancelotti’s back line, backed up last week’s 3-0 win over Haiti with another commanding display. Brazil rarely looked troubled. When Scotland did try to ask questions, Gabriel had the answers.
Vinicius punishes Scotland’s mistake
The breakthrough came from a Scottish error that Brazil punished ruthlessly. Scott McKenna misjudged a routine situation, gifting the ball to Bournemouth winger Rayan. One touch, head up, square pass. Vinicius Junior was waiting. The Real Madrid star tapped in from close range and Brazil were up and running.
From there, the five-time world champions settled into a familiar rhythm. Possession, territory, pressure. Scotland hung in, tried to stay compact, and looked for a way to reach half-time just one down.
They didn’t make it.
Deep into first-half stoppage time, Bruno Guimaraes drifted into space on the right and picked his moment. His cross arced to the back post, where Vinicius ghosted in and buried a header. Two for him, two for Brazil, and a mountain for Scotland.
Scotland chase, Brazil cruise
Chasing the game, Scotland turned to a familiar face for Arsenal fans. Kieran Tierney came off the bench as they searched for a route back, hoping his energy and delivery might spark something.
Instead, Brazil tightened their grip.
On the hour mark, the pressure told again. A slick move ended with Matheus Cunha in the right place to tap home Brazil’s third, killing off any faint Scottish hopes and locking in the points that would secure first place in the group on goal difference.
Six minutes later, another Arsenal connection entered the stage. Gabriel Martinelli was introduced for the final half-hour, adding fresh legs and direct running on the flank as Brazil managed the game out with the authority you expect from a side with their pedigree.
By the final whistle, the story was clear: back-to-back 3-0 wins, another clean sheet for Gabriel Magalhaes, and Brazil safely through as Group C winners.
Path set for Brazil – and a busy night for Gunners
Topping Group C sets Brazil on a collision course with the runner-up from Group F, currently Japan. The picture will sharpen tonight when Japan, featuring former Gunner Takehiro Tomiyasu, face Viktor Gyokeres’ Sweden at the Dallas Stadium. The winner of that clash is likely to meet the Selecao on Monday, June 29, at 6pm UK time.
Arsenal interest doesn’t stop there.
Two more Gunners are due to face off later this evening as Kai Havertz’s Germany take on Piero Hincapie’s Ecuador at the New York New Jersey Stadium. The stakes could hardly be more different for the two sides.
Ecuador sit on one point from two games and must win to have any chance of reaching the round of 32. Germany, by contrast, have already wrapped up top spot in Group E and can afford to rotate, refine, and look ahead.
Brazil and Germany are already in position. The question now is which of their club teammates will still be standing when the knockout rounds begin.
