Brighton Sign Canada Striker Promise David for £22m

Brighton have moved to bolster their attack with the signing of Canada striker Promise David from Royale Union Saint-Gilloise on a season-long loan, which includes an obligation to buy for a reported £22m.

The 25-year-old arrives on the south coast with a serious scoring record behind him. Since joining Union Saint-Gilloise in 2024, David has hit 41 goals and supplied nine assists in 82 appearances, numbers that quickly put him on the radar of clubs across Europe.

Brighton have now made their move.

From Malta to the Premier League

David’s route to the Premier League has been anything but straightforward. He began his career in Canada, then headed out on a winding journey that took in spells in Croatia and the United States.

From there, he dropped into the Maltese Premier League, turning out for two different clubs before earning a switch to Estonian side Nomme Kalju. His form in Estonia opened the door to Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, where his blend of power and penalty-box instinct began to stand out in European competition.

That rise has now carried him into English football.

World Cup breakthrough

David has also forced his way onto the international stage. He featured in four of Canada’s five matches at the World Cup, coming off the bench in each appearance. His standout moment came in the group stage, when he scored in a 2-1 defeat to Switzerland, underlining his threat even in limited minutes.

Brighton clearly believe that impact can translate to the Premier League.

Club excitement over new No 9

"Promise is someone we have been watching for some time, he is an out-and-out striker who possesses outstanding physical attributes and a track record of scoring goals," said sporting director Mike Cave.

"His experience at international level and in European competition will hopefully prove valuable this season.

"At 25, he's entering his prime playing years and we're excited to see him continue to develop in our environment."

Brighton wanted a pure centre-forward with presence, pace and penalty-box edge. Now they have one. The question is simple: can Promise David turn that promise into goals on English soil?
