Bruno Fernandes Faces Strain as Manchester United Prepare for City Derby

Bruno Fernandes has dragged himself through every minute of Manchester United’s season so far. On Thursday night, the strain finally showed.

Four games, four full 90s, four goals. The 32-year-old has been at the heart of everything for Michael Carrick’s side, capping his relentless start with a key strike in the 4-0 Champions League win over Sabah FK at Old Trafford. Yet as the celebrations died down, the images told a different story: Fernandes limping heavily, flanked by medical staff as he made his way out of the stadium.

The captain looked spent. And Carrick knew exactly why.

Carrick’s dilemma with his captain

Carrick had gone into the Sabah tie with rotation on his mind. The schedule is already unforgiving, the derby with Man City looming large on Sunday, and Fernandes has been running hot since the first whistle of the campaign.

But the game never allowed him the luxury of an early change.

“We only had five subs! We had to make certain decisions on what that looked like,” Carrick said, explaining why his captain stayed on while others were withdrawn. The flow of the match, the tactical balance, the limited substitution slots – they all combined to keep Fernandes out there until the end.

He didn’t hide from the reality that his skipper is being pushed hard.

“Of course, he's like anybody else. He has played an awful lot, but I think we're developing the group and the squad to be able to accommodate that in different ways,” Carrick added.

On this night, though, the plan bent under pressure. “Tonight was just one of those things, there were decisions to be made and he ended up staying on.”

The promise between the lines was clear: a breather is coming. It has to, if United want their talisman firing deep into the season.

Shaw worry ahead of the derby

Fernandes is not Carrick’s only concern.

Luke Shaw’s absence from the squad against Sabah raised eyebrows and alarm in equal measure. The left-back has been central to United’s defensive structure, and any doubt over his fitness before a meeting with City is a serious headache.

Carrick treaded carefully when asked for an update.

“We'll have to see. We just kind of looked after him a little bit going into tonight. He wasn't quite ready for it 100 per cent, so we didn't risk it. We'll see how he is over the next couple of days or so,” he said.

United cannot afford to be soft down the flanks against a City side that punishes every lapse in the final third. Losing Shaw would rip a sizeable hole in their defensive plans at precisely the wrong time.

Carrick now walks a tightrope: protect his key players’ bodies or risk them to protect the result.

Rashford held back, Sesko steps forward

Not every absentee was a cause for alarm.

Marcus Rashford sat out the midweek win, but this time the decision was calculated rather than forced. Carrick confirmed it was about preservation, not injury.

“A little bit of that, yeah, and trying to share the load a little bit, to a point, as well,” he said when asked if Rashford’s omission was precautionary.

The rotation opened the door for Benjamin Sesko. The forward banked valuable minutes, a small but important step in bedding him into the squad.

“We've got good options, so we're trying to keep everyone fresh, but with a point where Ben can get good minutes tonight and get him up to speed,” Carrick explained.

United walked off with a 4-0 win, a clean sheet, and a goalscoring captain. They also walked off with a limp, a doubt at left-back, and a derby on the horizon that will not wait for anyone to heal.

The question now is simple: can Carrick’s balancing act hold when City arrive, or will the early-season workload come crashing down at the worst possible moment?
