The Bundesliga weekend throws up a mix of rescue missions, reality checks and one heavyweight test of title credentials. Five games, five very different storylines.
Werder Bremen vs Augsburg (Saturday, 2:30pm)
Weserstadion has its spark back. Werder Bremen look far sharper than they did at the start of last season and could chalk up a third win in five if they get this right.
They won’t have it easy.
Augsburg arrive unbeaten, full of belief and with an attack that has already shown it can hurt teams in different ways. Their front line carries enough pace and variety to stretch a Bremen defence that still gives up chances.
Werder’s improvement is real, but so is the gap in cutting edge.

Borussia Monchengladbach are managerless, pointless and staring at the prospect of a fourth straight defeat. The goals have dried up, the belief with them, and the atmosphere could turn quickly if this starts badly.
Mainz 05 sense blood.
They lost last time out, but this is the kind of fixture they will privately view as a gift: a wounded opponent, short on ideas and confidence, and already among the weakest sides in the division on current form.
If Gladbach blank again, the alarm bells will ring even louder.
Prediction: Borussia Monchengladbach 0-4 Mainz 05
Given Gladbach’s struggles at both ends, a heavy Mainz win is firmly on the cards.
Eintracht Frankfurt vs Freiburg (Saturday, 2:30pm)
Goals. This one screams goals.
Eintracht Frankfurt sit ninth with four points from three games, lively going forward but alarmingly open at the back. Freiburg, meanwhile, top the table with a perfect nine from nine, fresh from a 5-0 demolition of Borussia Monchengladbach on September 12.
The visitors have rhythm, confidence and a ruthless edge in the final third. Frankfurt have attacking threat of their own, yet their defensive vulnerability keeps undermining them.
If this turns into a shootout, Freiburg are better equipped to survive it.
Prediction: Eintracht Frankfurt 2-4 Freiburg
Both sides should land punches, but Freiburg’s balance and efficiency make them favourites at Deutsche Bank Park.
Hamburger SV vs FC Koln (Saturday, 2:30pm)
Volksparkstadion hosts a club on the brink of an unwanted slice of history.
Hamburger SV have played three, lost three, scored none and conceded 12. Bottom of the table on goal difference, Merlin Polzin’s side are staring at the possibility of going an entire month of league football without a single Bundesliga goal.
That kind of drought weighs heavily.
FC Koln arrive with problems of their own, yet their outlook has brightened. El Mala is fit to start, restoring a key attacking outlet. With Dallinga still out, Ache leads the line, offering a more direct option even if Koln lose the Dutch striker’s impact from the bench.
HSV’s desperation, and home support, make them dangerous. One goal could change the mood in an instant. But Koln’s control in midfield through Skhiri and Krauss, combined with El Mala’s speed against a defence leaking more than four goals a game, gives the visitors a clear route to three points.
Prediction: Hamburger SV 0-1 FC Koln
Koln are backed to edge a tight contest, keeping HSV’s nightmare start alive for at least another week.
Stuttgart vs Borussia Dortmund (Saturday, 5:30pm)
The late game carries a different kind of tension.
Borussia Dortmund have started perfectly: three games, three wins, nine points, second only on goal difference. Every victory tightens the focus on whether they can sustain a title challenge.
Stuttgart, down in 14th with three points, stand in their way but have yet to convince without the ball. Their structure off possession has looked loose, and that is a dangerous flaw against a Dortmund side that punishes space between the lines.
The hosts can threaten going forward and should test BVB’s back line. Dortmund’s defensive resolve is likely to be worked over and a clean sheet would be a bonus rather than an expectation.
Yet if Stuttgart do not quickly fix their frailty without the ball, they risk being picked apart.
Prediction: Stuttgart 1-3 Borussia Dortmund
BVB are backed to extend their perfect start, even if they have to take a punch before landing a few of their own.
