Arsenal Considering January Loan for Max Dowman
Mikel Arteta has left the door wide open for Max Dowman to leave Arsenal on loan in January – but only if the club are convinced it will accelerate the teenager’s rapid rise.
Dowman is still only 16. He burst onto the scene with a Premier League debut at 15, thrown into a 5-0 demolition of Leeds United in August 2025, and has been on a steep upward curve ever since. Last season he clocked up 10 competitive appearances and marked his growing reputation with a first professional goal in a 2-0 win over Everton in March.
This week he reminded everyone why Arsenal rate him so highly. A sharp, fearless brace in a 4-2 EFL Cup victory over Ipswich Town on Tuesday underlined his talent and his temperament. He looked ready for more.
Blocked path, big decision
Dowman’s problem is not ability. It’s the names in front of him.
Arteta’s attacking midfield and right-wing slots are stacked with Martin Odegaard, Eberechi Eze, Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke. That level of competition has left the teenager without a single league minute so far, even as his stock continues to rise.
Inside the club, there is a growing sense that the next step in his development might have to come away from the Emirates. Regular senior football, week after week, is the lure.
Arteta made it clear Arsenal are prepared to consider it – but only on their terms.
“We will evaluate every six months where we are and what is the best thing for him to do and then make the right decision,” Arteta told reporters. “It depends on a lot of factors. What he needs, and what the team needs as well, the availability we have in the squad, the minutes that he is playing and the quality of those minutes.
“We have to be open, but now the focus is to be here and to impact the team.”
The calendar gives Arsenal a natural breakpoint. Dowman turns 17 on December 31, which makes him eligible to complete a loan move right as the January window opens.
Luton links – but how low will Arsenal go?
One club will be watching that birthday closely: Luton Town.
Jack Wilshere’s Arsenal ties – as both former player and coach – naturally link Luton with any young Gunner in need of minutes, and Dowman is no exception. A spell under Wilshere in a demanding environment would carry its own appeal.
The question is level.
There is an expectation that Arsenal could push for a Championship move rather than sanction a drop to League One. A second-tier loan would throw Dowman into one of the strongest leagues in Europe outside the traditional big five, a relentless schedule against seasoned professionals and promotion-chasing squads.
The template is already there. Chelsea’s 17-year-old Ryan Kavuma-McQueen has shown age is no barrier to that kind of challenge, making three starts in six league outings for Portsmouth on a season-long loan.
Arsenal now have to decide whether Dowman’s next test should look the same – or whether his education is better served fighting for minutes in a star-studded squad in north London.
