Calvin Ramsay Ready to Rebuild at St Mirren After Liverpool Loan

Calvin Ramsay says he is ready to “rebuild myself” at St Mirren after sealing a season-long loan move from Liverpool – a reset moment for a career that has stalled far from home.

The 23-year-old right-back left Aberdeen for Anfield in a £4.1m deal four years ago, tipped as one of Scotland’s most polished young full-backs. Since then, the reality has bitten hard: just four first-team appearances for Liverpool and a succession of short-term loans at Preston, Bolton, Wigan and Kilmarnock, yielding only 26 senior games.

Now he is back in the Premiership, back in a league he trusts, and back with a point to prove.

“I know the league and I wanted to come back up here and try and show what I can do and rebuild myself again,” Ramsay said after completing the move to Paisley. “I feel like it's a good place to come. I want to try and perform, work as hard as I can and see where that takes me.”

This is not the same St Mirren he left behind. The club has evolved, the style has sharpened, and Ramsay believes that shift matches his own strengths.

“It's probably a different St Mirren compared to the last few years. That'll suit me,” he added. “I'm comfortable on the ball, I'm composed, I like to get on it and try and create things and make things happen.”

Those are the qualities that first drew Liverpool to him and earned him a Scotland cap in 2022. They are also what St Mirren manager Craig McLeish is banking on as he reshapes his squad.

McLeish hailed Ramsay as an “exceptional” full-back and stressed the significance of the season ahead for the defender.

“It's a really important year for Calvin where he needs to find regular football to help kick on his career and we're happy to give him that platform because we get an exceptional young player to add to our group,” the manager said.

St Mirren get a technically assured, attack-minded right-back. Ramsay gets something even more valuable: games, responsibility, and the chance to prove that the player who left Aberdeen for the Premier League is still in there, waiting to break out again.
