Cardiff City Boosted by Dylan Lawlor's Return for Championship Clash
Cardiff City’s search for a first Championship win of the season has been handed a significant lift with the return of Wales defender Dylan Lawlor for Saturday’s home clash with Charlton Athletic.
The 20-year-old has not kicked a ball in the 2026-27 campaign because of a knee injury, but he is back in contention for the lunchtime fixture at Cardiff City Stadium (12:30 BST) and, crucially, back at full tilt.
“Dylan will definitely be available, he's good to go,” confirmed head coach Brian Barry-Murphy, a line that will land well with a fanbase watching their side sit winless after seven league games.
Lawlor back, Fish waits
Lawlor rejoined full training this week alongside fellow centre-back Will Fish, though the former Manchester United defender will be made to wait a little longer after hernia surgery.
“Will Fish won't be available, he's probably another week behind so we're not going to take any chances, but Dylan's back fully fit,” Barry-Murphy said.
Lawlor’s absence has been keenly felt. He made 43 appearances for club and country in 2025-26, a breakthrough year that saw him surge from promising youngster to nailed-on starter under Barry-Murphy as Cardiff climbed out of League One.
That rise stalled only because of the knee problem which also saw him left out of Wales’ Nations League squad named on Tuesday. Now he is back, the only question is how quickly he is thrown into the heat of Championship battle.
“He's trained really well. We'll see how he is today and tomorrow, then make a decision based on who we feel is best to start this game,” said Barry-Murphy, whose side have drawn four and lost three of their opening seven league fixtures.
“But he's fully fit, with no issues with his knee whatsoever, and he looks great.”
Defensive reshuffle under pressure
Cardiff’s early-season story has been one of defensive improvisation. Injuries have forced Barry-Murphy into constant reshuffles at the back, with full-backs Perry Ng and Joel Bagan pressed into service in central roles.
New signing Krystian Bielik, brought in from West Bromwich Albion, has helped plug gaps, but the back line has rarely looked settled. Gabriel Osho has also missed games through injury, stretching resources even further.
That is why the sight of Lawlor back in full training, and Fish edging closer, feels like a turning point.
“They're two such outstanding players and to give us that extra depth to our squad that we've lacked in the earliest parts of the season is going to be really important,” Barry-Murphy said.
“I'm very pleased to get them back and will try to build them up gradually to make sure that they stay fit, and both players can be very important for us.”
The message is clear: Cardiff will not gamble with their returning defenders, but their presence alone changes the feel of a squad that has been stretched thin.
Attacking sparks still missing
While the defensive picture brightens, Cardiff remain without key Wales internationals Rubin Colwill and Isaak Davies, as well as defender Calum Chambers.
Chambers is dealing with knee, neck and back issues and is awaiting further clarity. Colwill and Davies, however, are edging closer, offering hope of more attacking thrust in the weeks ahead.
“We expect them to train in the middle of the international break, Rubin and Isaak,” Barry-Murphy revealed.
“Calum Chambers is having a further scan on his injury this afternoon, so we'll know more on the timescale.”
So Cardiff head into Saturday still short-handed, still chasing that elusive first win, but finally with one of their defensive pillars back in place. With Lawlor restored to the squad and reinforcements on the horizon, the question now is whether this is the moment the Bluebirds’ season finally takes flight.
