Ancelotti Unveils Youth-Focused Brazil Squad for Friendlies

Carlo Ancelotti has started a significant overhaul of the Brazil national team, leaving out several established players following a disappointing World Cup run. Among the notable absences is Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, as Ancelotti shifts focus to younger talent in preparation for the 2030 World Cup.

Veterans Omitted in Favor of Rising Stars

The new squad named for upcoming friendlies against Australia and India is noticeably youthful. Key veterans such as midfielders Casemiro and Fabinho have been excluded, alongside Neymar, who recently retired from international football. This decision reflects Ancelotti's commitment to building a fresh core, particularly targeting players eligible for the 2028 Olympic Games.

"The World Cup was a disappointment for us and for me personally," Ancelotti told ESPN. "The pain of the defeat lingers much longer. Now, however, we are motivated by the fact that we have time to prepare for a new cycle and get ready for the upcoming competitions."

Regarding his goalkeeper choices, Ancelotti explained, "We know Alisson very well, and when competitions like the Copa America come, if he remains the best goalkeeper in Brazil, Alisson will play. Right now, however, we have to prioritise the younger ones."

Experienced Players Remain to Support the Transition

Despite the major changes, some senior stars remain. Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior and Barcelona's Raphinha will spearhead the attack alongside Chelsea's Joao Pedro, returning after missing the World Cup. Leadership is further bolstered by Paris Saint-Germain captain Marquinhos and Arsenal's new signing Bruno Guimaraes.

"I chose these players to help with this change in direction," Ancelotti said. "They are crucial for the future and will help the younger players improve. One thing is certain: a player who is 34 or 35 years old isn’t the future; they are the present. If a player of that age is ready to play in a major tournament, they will be in the national squad."

Historic Friendlies Ahead

This refreshed Brazil team will travel to Australia for two friendlies, first facing the Socceroos in Townsville on September 25, then in Brisbane four days later. Following that, Brazil will visit Kolkata on October 3, marking their first-ever match in India, a country with millions of passionate fans.
