The Champions League is back on a Wednesday night, and it wastes no time. Liverpool against Atletico Madrid at Anfield, the holders PSG under pressure in Paris, Arsenal walking into a hostile Naples, and the new Camp Nou opening its doors to Europe again. Heavyweights everywhere, storylines already simmering.
Here’s how matchday one lines up.
FC Barcelona vs Feyenoord
(New) Camp Nou, Barcelona
European nights return to the rebuilt Camp Nou, and Barcelona arrive in frightening domestic form despite lacking a classic elite No. 9.
Hansi Flick’s side have ripped through La Liga early on, winning all four games and scoring five goals in three of them. Raphinha has exploded out of the blocks with six goals in four matches, while Lamine Yamal and Fermin Lopez have four apiece. This is not a team waiting for a moment of magic from a lone striker; it’s a side that swarms, breaks low blocks, and shares the goals around.
Frenkie de Jong is the major absentee, but Barcelona’s squad depth softens the blow. New faces like Rodri and Anthony Gordon give the XI extra thrust and variety in wide and half-space areas. At home, in a packed and emotional European return, they will expect to dominate.
Feyenoord arrive unbeaten and confident from their own league campaign. Luciano Valente and Gjivai Zechiel, both 22 and pushing for Dutch national team recognition, headline a young, ambitious side that won’t just roll over. They have form, they have energy.
What they don’t have is an easy route out of Barcelona with a result. On this stage, against this attack, the task looks huge.

Stuttgart vs Viking

Stuttgart have already lived both extremes of the new Bundesliga season. A 5–1 humiliation against Bayern Munich on opening day, followed by a 4–1 response against Koln. That volatility makes them fascinating, if unpredictable, Champions League participants.
Last season’s fourth-place finish in Germany underlined their progress, with 22-year-old Moroccan winger Bilal El Khannouss emerging as a standout threat. They are not at full strength – Luca Jaquez is among those sidelined – but they still carry enough quality and pace to trouble most visitors.
Viking, meanwhile, step onto the Champions League stage for the first time in their history. They earned it the hard way, edging Dinamo Zagreb in the final playoff round and winning Norway’s top division by a single point over Bodo/Glimt, one of Europe’s recent surprise packages. That domestic title run spoke of resilience and nerve.
They’ll need both. Veton Berisha is out, along with at least two other first-choice starters, a brutal blow ahead of a debut at this level.
Stuttgart’s greater squad value and home advantage tilt the balance, but Norwegian football has been rising, and this will quickly reveal whether Viking can carry their domestic momentum into Europe.

PSG vs Slovan Bratislava

The defending champions return to the competition with the trophy in their cabinet but doubts swirling around their form.
PSG edged Aston Villa 2–1 in the UEFA Super Cup, then stalled. Defeat to Lens in the Trophee des Champions, draws with Rennes and Lille, and a loss to AS Monaco in Ligue 1 have painted a picture of a side starting the season jaded and slightly off the pace.
Luis Enrique, though, still commands a galaxy of stars. Ferran Torres arrived from Barcelona in the summer, joined by Mika Godts from Ajax and Maghnes Akliouche. The attacking heartbeat remains the trident of Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The Georgian, one of the few global superstars not to feature at the World Cup, should be fresher than most as Europe’s big stage lights up again.
Even so, PSG have played like a team nursing a hangover.
Slovan Bratislava, Slovak champions and a proud name in their country, step back into the continental spotlight under Yaya Toure. Their recent domestic form has dipped, and the gap in resources here is stark. While PSG field internationals like Willian Pacho and a bench stacked with pedigree, Bratislava lean on a more eclectic mix: experienced forwards Andraz Sporar and Tigran Barseghyan among the key figures.
This is the sort of home fixture PSG are expected to control from the first whistle. Spaces should open, chances should flow. Anything else would deepen the unease in Paris.

Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid

Anfield under the lights. A new man in the home dugout. A familiar European antagonist in town.
Liverpool begin their Champions League campaign with Andoni Iraola at the helm, facing an Atletico Madrid side that knows exactly how to drag giants into uncomfortable, attritional battles.
The Premier League start has been steady rather than spectacular for Liverpool: two draws followed by a win over Ipswich. The squad list for Europe is already complicated. Federico Chiesa and Wataru Endo are unavailable, while Hugo Ekitike and Conor Bradley miss out through injury. On the plus side, Barcelona loanee Ronald Araujo is set to anchor the defence at centre-back.
Iraola’s big call comes on the right wing. Does he unleash Bradley Barcola, the headline attacking signing, or trust Victor Munoz, the Osasuna arrival who offers reliability and work rate? It’s the kind of selection that will shape how aggressively Liverpool can press and pin Atletico back.
Across the technical area, Diego Simeone has a different kind of problem. Julian Alvarez is a genuine star in La Liga and across Europe, but he pushed hard for a move to Barcelona that never materialised. The window is shut, Alvarez is registered, but he is deeply unhappy – and no longer the automatic starter he once was.
Atletico have refreshed heavily. Cristian Romero comes in from Spurs to bolster the back line, Alejandro Grimaldo arrives from Leverkusen, Jonathan David joins on loan from Juventus, with Kang-in Lee from PSG and Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP adding intelligence and bite in midfield. It’s a squad built to go deep in the knockout rounds.
Yet they showed vulnerability at the weekend, conceding three in a defeat to Athletic Bilbao – their first loss of the season.
Liverpool’s form is patchy, Atletico’s instinct in big away games is clear: absorb, frustrate, spoil, and leave with something. A point at Anfield would suit Simeone just fine, and the game feels primed for that kind of tight, tactical stalemate.
Prediction: 1–1 draw
Sporting CP vs Galatasaray
Estadio Jose Alvalade, Lisbon
This is one for the purists. Two giants from outside the so-called top five leagues, both armed with ambition and passionate fanbases, colliding in Lisbon.
Sporting CP have started their Liga Portugal campaign strongly, sitting 4–1–0. Colombian international Luis Suarez has impressed, and teenager Flavio Goncalves has injected youthful spark. The numbers tell a clear story: this is a young team, with an average starting age of 24.8, built on energy, development, and resale value.
Galatasaray bring the opposite profile. Their average age of 29.3 makes them one of the most experienced squads in Europe. They’ve opened the Turkish season at 3–1–0, powered by Victor Osimhen, who already has six goals.
And that’s the problem. Osimhen is out injured, ripping a huge hole in Galatasaray’s attacking plan. Responsibility shifts onto Brazilian attacking midfielder Gabriel Sara, who must now carry far more of the creative and scoring load.
Sporting, at home and with their legs and tempo, should feel this is their moment to strike. Galatasaray’s nous and experience keep this from being straightforward, but the balance leans toward the hosts.
Prediction: Sporting CP 2–1
Napoli vs Arsenal

Arsenal return to the Champions League with a point to prove. Last season ended in heartbreak, losing the final to PSG. This season, major broadcasters and pundits are openly tipping them to go one better.
The early signs back that up. Arsenal brushed aside Manchester City in the Community Shield, then opened their Premier League campaign with three straight wins, including impressive victories over Aston Villa and Chelsea.
They will, however, travel to Naples without key defensive pillars William Saliba and Jurrien Timber. New midfield signing Bruno Guimaraes is available and could feature either from the start or off the bench, adding control and bite in the centre. On the wing, Christos Tzolis, signed from Brugge, has already forced his way into the starting XI.
Napoli enter this tie wounded. Consecutive Serie A defeats to Como and Inter Milan – two of last season’s strongest Italian sides – have dented confidence. Home advantage at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona is significant, but they remain underdogs.
Kevin De Bruyne, now 35, may begin on the bench as Napoli manage his minutes, while Scott McTominay is still sidelined following heart surgery. Those absences strip away experience and physicality from the core of the team.
Arsenal’s rhythm, depth, and belief point in one direction. For Napoli, simply halting the slide against one of Europe’s form teams would be an achievement. Keeping them out for 90 minutes might be a step too far.
Prediction: Arsenal 3–1
The stage is set. Old powers, new projects, and a few dark horses all stepping into the light. By Thursday morning, the landscape of this Champions League season will already feel a little different.
