The London club have had three sizeable bids rejected for the 23-year-old Bournemouth midfielder, with iNews reporting that offers between £62 million and £68m have been turned away without serious discussion. Bournemouth’s stance is blunt: Scott is not for sale.
Chelsea’s Enzo problem collides with Bournemouth’s resolve
Chelsea are bracing for the likely departure of Enzo Fernandez and had identified Scott as a key target to reshape their midfield. Most of their summer business was wrapped up early, but a central midfielder was always on the agenda. Scott quickly emerged as the preferred option.
The admiration is easy to understand. The “amazing” Englishman has just come off another impressive campaign on the south coast, drawing attention from several top clubs. Talks over a new contract at Bournemouth were paused last month, which only sharpened interest around the league.
Chelsea pushed hard. Bournemouth pushed back harder.
The Cherries have made it crystal clear to players, agents and suitors that their leading lights will stay put for the coming season. The message has been consistent and, crucially, backed by action in the market.
Europa League changes the equation
Bournemouth’s refusal is not just about price. It is about timing, ambition and control.
After qualifying for the Europa League, the club hierarchy studied how other Premier League sides have coped with the extra demands of European football. The conclusion was stark: teams that dismantle their core ahead of a European campaign often pay for it.
So Bournemouth have chosen a different route. They want stability. They want their best players on the pitch, not on someone else’s balance sheet.
That thinking extends to the dugout. With Marco Rose arriving as the new manager, Bournemouth moved early to shape his squad, completing much of their transfer business at the start of the window. It gave Rose clarity and sent a firm signal to the market that there would be no late fire sale.
Scott sits at the heart of that plan. Losing him now, days before the deadline, was never going to be entertained.
Manchester City watch on – and look elsewhere
Manchester City have also tracked Scott, intrigued by his development and profile. Yet Bournemouth’s hard line has had an impact there too. City, aware of the Cherries’ reluctance to negotiate, have started to explore alternative targets rather than get drawn into a prolonged chase.
One of those alternatives is, intriguingly, Enzo Fernandez himself. The same midfielder Chelsea are preparing to lose, and the one they had hoped Scott would replace.
That circular dynamic underlines the tension at Stamford Bridge: Chelsea may be willing to cash in on Enzo, but only if a suitable replacement is in place. At this stage, all signs suggest Scott will not be that man.
