Chelsea’s Attack Changes: Estevao Willian’s Role Under Scrutiny
Chelsea’s first attacking shake-up of the night has arrived – and it does nothing to ease the growing questions around Estevao Willian’s role.

The knock-on effect is clear: any route onto the pitch for the Brazilian would either force him into an unfamiliar role on the left or disrupt Palmer. Alonso chose neither. He trusted Quenda wide, kept Palmer where he thrives and left Estevao waiting.
He will almost certainly be the next attacking card played. But the symbolism matters. When a young “wonderkid” goes from not starting to not even being the first substitute, the narrative around his integration shifts quickly.
To make matters worse for him, the right flank has hardly sparkled. Pedro Neto has been grinding away out there, working hard but with limited end product. Every heavy touch and blocked cross only sharpens the sense of frustration for Estevao, watching a position he craves being laboured through for 90 minutes.
Henderson brings calm on debut
Amid the noise around the forward line, one of the quieter stories of the night has been Jordan Henderson’s performance.
On debut, the veteran midfielder has stood out not for any spectacular moment but for something Chelsea have badly lacked in recent seasons: calm. He has taken care of the ball, set the tempo, and given Alonso a reliable reference point in the middle of the pitch.
For a club still trying to map out its midfield hierarchy, Henderson’s assured opening act feels significant. While the spotlight lingers on Estevao’s wait and Alonso’s attacking choices, the new signing has quietly started to stake his claim at the heart of this evolving Chelsea side.
