FC Groningen Dominates PEC Zwolle with 3-0 Victory
FC Groningen did not just beat PEC Zwolle on Friday night. They pushed them aside with authority. A 3-0 win at a lively Euroborg lifted Dick Lukkien’s team into sixth place, while a bruised PEC slid down to 16th and left with more questions than answers.
PEC Zwolle arrived still carrying the scars of that 0-7 hammering by Feyenoord. The mission was clear: show a reaction, tighten up, restore some pride. Instead, Groningen seized the initiative from the first whistle and never really let go.
The hosts moved the ball with purpose, snapping into challenges, pinning PEC back. After 20 minutes, the pressure broke the visitors’ resistance.
Marco Rente spotted the gap and threaded a clever ball into Jorg Schreuders. The midfielder showed real composure, pausing just long enough to draw defenders before rolling the ball back into space for Thom van Bergen. One touch, then a calm finish. 1-0, and the Euroborg erupted.
PEC Zwolle wobbled. Groningen smelled blood.
Not long after, Schreuders stepped out of the role of provider and took centre stage himself. Ryan Thomas was caught in possession, and Schreuders pounced. He drove forward and, from outside the box, unleashed a strike with his supposedly weaker left foot. The shot flew in, 2-0, and PEC’s fragile confidence took another hit.
By half-time, Groningen looked in total control. PEC Zwolle, desperate not to suffer another collapse, at least managed to keep the scoreline from spiralling before the break, but they rarely threatened to change the story.
After the interval, there was finally a flicker from the visitors. Gabriël Reiziger darted to the near post to meet a low cross from the left and got the faintest of touches. For a moment, it seemed PEC might have a lifeline, but the ball slid just wide of the far post. Close, but still not enough to truly trouble Groningen.
That half-chance did not rattle the home side. Groningen stayed compact, managed the tempo, and kept PEC at arm’s length. When the next goal came, it underlined the gulf in confidence and execution.
On 68 minutes, the Euroborg crowd was treated to something special. From an indirect, rehearsed free-kick routine, Tygo Land stepped up and hammered a stunning effort into the top corner. A training-ground move, executed perfectly. 3-0, game over.
PEC Zwolle were beaten, and they knew it.
Groningen, though, kept pushing. Van Bergen almost grabbed his second of the night late on. The ball broke kindly for him in the penalty area, and again he found room to shoot. This time his left foot let him down, the effort lacking the precision of his opener.
It did not matter. The damage was done.
For FC Groningen, this was a statement: organised, ruthless, and climbing the table. For PEC Zwolle, another heavy defeat, another long trip home, and a season that is starting to feel like a battle for survival rather than progress.
