Chelsea Eye Marcus Rashford as Late Transfer Target

Chelsea are weighing up a dramatic late move for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford in the final stretch of the summer transfer window, according to The Independent.

After a window already north of £300m, you might think Stamford Bridge had slammed the door on major attacking business. Not quite. Inside the club, discussions are ongoing about whether to add one more versatile forward to Álvaro Alonso’s rapidly rebuilt squad, and Rashford’s name has surged to the top of that list.

Rashford shock on the table

A deal for the 28-year-old England international would be one of the shocks of the summer. Rashford is a homegrown icon at Old Trafford, a player with more than 400 appearances for United and a profile that rarely comes onto the market, even in theory.

But his future has been uncertain for months. He spent last season on loan at Barcelona, pushing for a permanent switch to Camp Nou. That move never materialised. Instead, he was sent back to Manchester, where the club’s stance appeared to waver.

Initially, United were widely believed to be open to cashing in on the forward on his return. Then came a twist on opening weekend. Michael Carrick, under pressure after a dismal 2-0 home defeat to Hull City, turned to Rashford at half-time, bringing him on as a substitute. It looked like a public signal that the manager still sees a role for him.

Even so, Chelsea are watching closely. If United soften, they want to be ready.

Chelsea still hunting firepower

Alonso’s first league outing as Chelsea boss delivered chaos and encouragement in equal measure: a breathless 3-2 win over west London rivals Fulham. Goals flowed, but the performance also exposed the need for sharper, more ruthless options in the final third.

So the recruitment drive continues.

Chelsea have already smashed records, most notably by making Morgan Rogers the most expensive British player in history. Experience has arrived too, with former England internationals Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson adding leadership and know-how to a young dressing room. Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra and Valentin Barco have all come through the door as part of a sweeping overhaul.

Yet the feeling persists that the attack still needs a different kind of threat. Rashford’s pace, movement across the front line and ability to play wide or centrally make him an obvious – if ambitious – target.

Sales before a splash

Any move for Rashford will hinge on outgoings. Chelsea’s hierarchy know they must move players on before committing to another marquee signing.

• Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap are both expected to be sold, with the club actively working on exits for the pair.
• Offers will also be entertained for Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto, as the squad is trimmed and the wage bill recalibrated.

Then there is the biggest financial lever of all: Enzo Fernandez. The Argentine midfielder remains heavily linked with Manchester City, who see him as a potential long-term solution in the heart of their midfield. Chelsea, though, have drawn a hard line. Any deal would start at £120m, a fee that would both help balance the books and potentially bankroll a serious push for Rashford.

A late-window power play?

For now, Chelsea are in the familiar late-August position of running parallel strategies: clear the decks, protect key assets, and stay alert for an opportunity that could tilt the season.

Rashford represents exactly that kind of opportunity. A statement signing, a direct raid on a traditional rival, and a player whose best years should still be ahead of him.

United and Carrick may yet shut the door. But if the situation opens up in the final days of the window, Chelsea have made one thing clear: they are ready to move.
