Chelsea Close In On Marco Palestra Signing
Chelsea are closing in on their latest defensive statement signing, with Italy international Marco Palestra undergoing his medical in London ahead of a big-money move from Atalanta.
The right-back flew into the capital on Monday, his camp now ironing out the final details of a long-term contract that underlines just how hard Chelsea pushed to win this race. Inter thought they were in it. Then Chelsea arrived with Premier League muscle and changed the conversation.
The London club have blown their Serie A rivals out of the water on salary, offering Palestra a net €5m per season – double the €2.5m proposal that had been on the table from Inter. The deal on offer is a six-year contract with an option for a seventh, the kind of commitment that signals both trust and expectation.
The numbers behind the transfer fee tell their own story. Reports in Italy suggest Atalanta will receive €57m plus a further €3m in add-ons, taking the package to a potential €60m. British transfer specialist Ben Jacobs has described the figure as “in excess of €50m,” while Sky Sport Italia have gone stronger with the €57m plus bonuses breakdown. The exact headline number may be debated, but the scale of the investment is not.
Atalanta have protected their future, too. The Bergamo club are understood to have secured a 10 per cent cut of any future sale, a clause that hints at how highly they rate the 22-year-old’s trajectory and how confident they are that this is not his last major move.
Once the medical is completed and the paperwork signed, Chelsea will have their man: an attacking right-back entering his prime, arriving for a fee that places him firmly among the most expensive defenders of his generation. Atalanta, meanwhile, bank a huge sum and keep a stake in whatever comes next.
If Palestra grows as Chelsea believe he will, that 10 per cent could yet become very expensive for someone else.
