Chelsea are closing in on their latest defensive statement signing, with Italy international Marco Palestra undergoing his medical in London ahead of a big-money move from Atalanta.

The London club have blown their Serie A rivals out of the water on salary, offering Palestra a net €5m per season – double the €2.5m proposal that had been on the table from Inter.
