Chelsea Considering Late Move for Marcus Rashford
Chelsea are weighing up a late, headline-grabbing move for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford as the transfer window ticks towards its deadline, according to reports.
The idea would have sounded far-fetched at the start of the summer. Chelsea have already blown past the £300m mark on signings, smashing the British transfer record to land Morgan Rogers and reshaping Xabi Alonso’s squad with a flurry of big-money deals.
Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra and Valentin Barco have all arrived for serious fees. Experience has been layered on top, with former England internationals Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson brought in to steady a young dressing room.
The early signs on the pitch were chaotic but thrilling. Chelsea opened their Premier League campaign with a breathless 3-2 win over west London neighbours Fulham on Monday night, a result that underlined both their attacking potential and their defensive frailty.
Now the emphasis at Stamford Bridge is on trimming the squad and raising funds. Nicolas Jackson and Liam Delap are both expected to be sold, while the club are ready to listen to offers for Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto. Enzo Fernandez, meanwhile, remains on Manchester City’s radar, but Chelsea are holding firm at a valuation of at least £120m for the Argentina midfielder.
Even as they try to move players out, senior figures at the club are understood to be open to adding one more versatile attacker before the window shuts next week. That is where Rashford comes into the conversation.
According to The Independent, Chelsea are exploring the possibility of a late bid for the England forward, who spent last season on loan at Barcelona. Rashford had hoped to turn that spell at the Nou Camp into a permanent switch, only to be sent back to Old Trafford when no agreement materialised.
United were initially thought to be ready to cash in on the 28-year-old on his return. Then Michael Carrick’s public stance shifted the narrative. Speaking to ITV1 during pre-season, the United manager sounded very much like a man planning to keep him.
“He’s our player, you know, and he’s come back great. He’s just like any other player,” Carrick said. “I’ve known Marcus a long time and, you know, he gives us something a little bit different. And he’s been in great spirits since he’s been back.
“He’s been back two or three days training and it’s just pretty normal, to be honest. And we’re looking forward to the start of the season.”
Carrick backed that up with minutes. Rashford came off the bench at half-time in United’s Premier League opener away to Hull City on Saturday, although he could not prevent a shock 2-0 defeat that immediately turned the spotlight on United’s attack.
Rashford’s status at Old Trafford is complicated by his history. He has already passed 400 appearances for his boyhood club, a decade on from his breakthrough. Yet he now faces a pivotal moment in his career, with his place and his future under scrutiny at 28.
At Chelsea, there are those who believe he would be worth the gamble. Former Blues midfielder Andy Townsend is firmly in that camp, especially after Chelsea allowed Alejandro Garnacho to leave on loan for Aston Villa.
“I think Marcus Rashford improves Chelsea’s squad, he is an improvement on Alejandro Garnacho, that’s for sure,” Townsend told CasinoHawks.
“The number we were talking about was £35m. I’m very surprised that no one has come to get him for that money, even if he’s 28.
“Wide strikers are asked to produce a lot of output nowadays, and there aren’t many operating in the top flight at thirty-two or thirty-three. So these next couple of years for Marcus are big. It has to be the right move.”
The fee is only part of the equation. Rashford’s wages are substantial and would test any club’s structure.
“He’s on massive wages, which is an issue for any club, but you’d think he could get that to a level everyone finds acceptable. A club like Chelsea might suit him,” Townsend added. “I could see that. I like Pedro Neto, but he sometimes flatters to deceive. Garnacho is far too inconsistent, like Jadon Sancho, those sorts of players are difficult to accommodate.
“Rashford showed at Barcelona that he can play at a big club, he understands that mentality.
“At £35m, I’d be surprised if a deal doesn’t get done, depending on his salary demands. If he wants to stick on £300,000-a-week, then he’s going to have a problem.
“But there’s no point in going back to Manchester United and not playing at his age. That doesn’t send a great image to potential suitors if he’s happy to just sit on the bench.
“Marcus and his team should be working around the clock to find the right environment for him at the right level, wage-wise. You want to play.
“At nearly 29, he’s in his peak, and he needs to be out there more often than not.”
Chelsea have money on the table from expected sales, a manager who wants another attacker and a fanbase used to box-office moves. United have a homegrown star at a crossroads, a manager publicly backing him, and a squad that has already stumbled on opening day.
