Chelsea’s Midfield Struggles Highlighted Despite £349m Summer Spending

Chelsea suffered a 2-1 loss to reigning champions Arsenal on Sunday, ending the match with two former right-backs deployed side by side in midfield. This raised questions about the depth and quality of Chelsea’s midfield options after a hefty £349m outlay during the summer transfer window.

Reece James, originally a right-back, failed to track Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard as he netted the winning goal at the Emirates Stadium. Despite this lapse, James had shown strong performances elsewhere, having spent almost half of last season playing in midfield. But the appearance of James alongside another right-back, Malo Gusto, who came on for midfielder Romeo Lavia in the second half, points to a shortage of midfield resources.

The lack of creativity from substitutes further hampered Chelsea, while Arsenal’s boss Mikel Arteta’s tactical changes helped his team secure victory. Chelsea are not involved in European competitions this season, allowing them to focus solely on the Premier League, but ending a game against champions with two right-backs in midfield is a worrying sign.

Caicedo’s injury leaves manager Xabi Alonso in unfamiliar territory since the Ecuadorian has been almost ever-present over the past three seasons, missing just two matches due to minor knocks or illness.

Alonso admitted they might have rushed Caicedo back too soon and want to avoid repeating that mistake. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s pursuit of midfield reinforcements stalled on transfer deadline day. A £47m move for Lamine Camara was blocked by Monaco, leaving Stamford Bridge officials frustrated. Bids of up to £64m for Bournemouth’s Alex Scott were rejected, and a potential signing of Manu Kone was stopped by Roma’s coach Gian Piero Gasperini.

Despite offloading Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City for a joint British-record £125m on deadline day, Chelsea did not bring in a direct replacement. The club claimed they were satisfied with their summer acquisitions and viewed Camara’s pursuit as a market opportunity rather than a necessity.

Caicedo’s injury adds to the absence of Jordan Henderson, recovering from a broken arm sustained during the World Cup. Valentin Barco, a natural midfielder signed from Strasbourg, has not featured in any of Chelsea’s three Premier League games, with Gusto preferred in midfield instead.

During last weekend’s 4-3 win over Brighton, Gusto’s presence in midfield coincided with Chelsea having only 25.6% possession — their lowest since records began in 2003-04. If all midfielders return fit and Caicedo’s injury turns out to be minor, Alonso believes five midfielders should suffice without midweek European fixtures.

In attack, Chelsea have relied on Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer, and Joao Pedro, but conceding seven goals in three matches shows defensive frailty. Alonso emphasized the need to tighten up defensively.

Alonso Remains Hopeful Despite Setbacks

There were positives in Chelsea’s display against Arsenal. Club-record signing Morgan Rogers scored early, becoming the first Chelsea player since Eden Hazard in 2018-19 to score or assist in each of the club’s first three Premier League matches of a season. It was arguably one of Chelsea’s better efforts against Arsenal during a 10-game winless streak versus their London rivals.

Chelsea ended last season 33 points behind Arsenal, and Alonso admitted this defeat hurts but insisted it won’t affect the team’s spirit.

"We came to win. We knew we were close, but it went their way. It hurts, we’re disappointed for sure. But this is the first defeat; there’s a long way to go and it doesn’t impact our mood or mindset," Alonso said.

Arsenal remain the benchmark Chelsea aspire to reach. Despite securing Rogers ahead of Arsenal, the Blues still trail the London and Premier League leaders. Chelsea’s failure to sign a midfield replacement for Fernandez before the transfer deadline may have exposed a vulnerability. Alonso called the summer recruitment phase one, implying more adjustments could come. If Caicedo’s return does not solve the midfield issues, questions will arise about the club’s January transfer strategy.
