Chelsea's Late Decision on Moises Caicedo's Fitness Ahead of Premier League Clash

Chelsea will leave it late on Moises Caicedo’s fitness, with a final call on the midfielder not due until Saturday – just 24 hours before they face the Premier League champions.

The 24-year-old’s season has barely started and already feels stop–start. He sat out the opening league win over Fulham, then watched from the sidelines again as Chelsea eased past Luton Town in the Carabao Cup. When he did get on the pitch last weekend, his evening lasted barely a quarter of an hour.

Caicedo came off the bench in the 68th minute of Chelsea’s wild 4-3 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, only to go down clutching the same problem 14 minutes later. Medical staff treated him on the turf before he eventually walked off under his own steam. The fact it was a recurring issue set alarm bells ringing at Cobham.

At his pre-match press conference on Friday, Alonso cut a careful figure when questions turned to one of his most important players. Caicedo was central to Chelsea’s campaign last season, even as they stumbled to 10th place, and has grown into a leader in the dressing room.

The Ecuador international, now vice-captain behind Reece James, has already amassed 149 appearances for the club since arriving from Brighton in August 2023. For a squad still finding its identity, he is part of the spine. Losing him on the eve of a derby would be a major blow.

“We will check tomorrow, tomorrow is the last decision for the squad on Sunday,” Alonso told reporters, refusing to be drawn into speculation. He urged calm around the situation while the medical team complete their work. “We [need to] not worry, we need to check tomorrow and take the final decision.”

Midfield, though, is not the bare cupboard it once was at Stamford Bridge. Enzo Fernandez’s move to Manchester City forced Chelsea back into the market, and the club moved aggressively to reshape the centre of the pitch for Alonso.

Valentin Barco has arrived to inject youth and dynamism. Jordan Henderson brings the opposite: years of experience, a voice, and a sense of order in the chaos of Premier League games. The manager is convinced that mix can carry Chelsea through, with or without Caicedo.

“[We have] different qualities, personalities,” Alonso said as he ran through his options. “Valentin’s young, but he has come with great energy. We have Hendo, he has the composure, the mentality, he knows what’s going on in the games. He’s getting closer, closer to playing time.”

The stakes on Sunday sharpen every selection call. Both Arsenal and Chelsea have taken maximum points from their first two league fixtures. The Gunners have brushed past Coventry City and Aston Villa. Chelsea have edged out Fulham and then Brighton in that seven-goal thriller. Something has to give.

If the medical verdict goes against Caicedo on Saturday, Alonso will not hesitate to shuffle the deck. He has already flagged Romeo Lavia as another option, while hinting at more inventive tweaks.

“We have Rom (Romeo Lavia), Reece (James) as well, Malo (Gusto) – he can play [in midfield],” Alonso added, underlining his belief that his system can survive personnel changes.

The plan is clear. The only unknown now is whether one of Chelsea’s key lieutenants will be on the pitch when the champions come to town.
