Chelsea Pursue Honest Ahanor: Talks with Atalanta Begin
Chelsea have stepped up their pursuit of Honest Ahanor, opening preliminary talks with Atalanta and the defender’s representatives as they explore a deal for one of Serie A’s most coveted young talents, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The London club’s interest comes in the wake of Atalanta already turning down a €34m bid from Brighton earlier in the summer. That rejection set the tone: Ahanor is not on the bargain shelf.
Atalanta dig their heels in
Sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli has been clear since July. Atalanta do not want to lose any of their best or most promising players, and Ahanor is firmly in that bracket. The stance is hardline, and it is public. Any club coming to the table knows they are negotiating with a side determined to keep its core intact.
Ahanor, just 18, joined Atalanta from Genoa in 2025 in a €16m move, a sizeable fee for a teenager and a sign of how highly he was rated even then. In Bergamo, he has justified that investment quickly.
He has already made 28 Serie A appearances and forced his way into the Italy senior set-up, making his debut in June under caretaker coach Silvio Baldini. That kind of trajectory at his age explains why Premier League clubs are circling — and why Atalanta feel no pressure to cash in.
Versatility that fits Chelsea’s blueprint
On the pitch, Ahanor offers exactly the kind of flexibility modern superclubs crave. He can operate as a left wing-back, bombing up and down the flank, or tuck inside as a centre-back, particularly on the left of a three-man defence. For a squad that often shifts shape mid-game, that sort of profile is gold.
Chelsea’s recruitment over recent windows has leaned heavily toward young, high-upside players who can grow into long-term pillars. Ahanor fits that model neatly: already tested in Serie A and the Champions League, but still with years of development ahead.
Familiar negotiating table
There is another wrinkle: Chelsea and Atalanta already know each other well from this summer’s market. Marco Palestra has just completed a €60m switch from the Gewiss Stadium to Stamford Bridge, a deal that required prolonged and detailed talks between the clubs.
Those channels are now open. Relationships have been established. That does not mean Atalanta will soften their stance on Ahanor, but it does make dialogue easier and quicker as Chelsea probe the possibility of a second major deal in the same window.
Giuntoli, starting his first season in charge of Atalanta’s sporting operations, has been joined by new coach Maurizio Sarri, with whom he previously worked at Napoli. Together they are trying to build a competitive, stable project in Bergamo. Losing a cornerstone of their defensive future at 18 would run directly against that plan.
Chelsea have made their first move. Atalanta have already shown they are ready to say no. The next bid, if it comes, will reveal how badly the Blues want Honest Ahanor — and just how high the price of prising him out of Bergamo will climb.
