Cole Palmer's Commitment to England Questioned After Squad Withdrawal
Cole Palmer’s England commitment has been thrown under the spotlight after the Chelsea playmaker pulled out of the latest squad despite playing a full 90 minutes just days earlier.
Thomas Tuchel had recalled Palmer for England’s upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Spain, Czechia and Croatia, his first involvement since missing out on the 2026 World Cup squad. It should have been a fresh start. Instead, it has ignited a storm.
Palmer withdrew from the camp citing injury issues, even though he completed Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to Brentford on Friday. The optics were always going to be harsh. They were brutal.
He is one of five players to leave the England setup, a group that also includes Declan Rice and Kobbie Mainoo. In response, Morgan Gibbs-White and James Garner have been drafted in. The reshuffle has only sharpened the focus on Palmer’s decision and the timing of it, with frustration building among supporters and commentators.
On talkSPORT, Adrian Durham went straight for the jugular.
“I am starting to question Cole Palmer's commitment to England,” he said. “14 caps, two goals. He's played in one World Cup qualifier in his career, and in that he was awful away to Andorra in June 2025. He's played five times for England since the Euros when he scored in the final. England have had 28 games since the Euro final in 2024 against Spain.”
Durham accepted that players get injured. That part, he said, is unavoidable. What he could not ignore was the pattern: five appearances out of a possible 28 since that Euro final.
For him, that ratio speaks to something deeper than fitness.
He pushed Palmer to make his position unmistakably clear.
“I'm questioning his commitment to England. Does he really want to play for England? If you don't, tell the world you don't want to play for England,” Durham added.
The criticism did not stop there. Durham argued that sporadic availability from a key attacking midfielder has a knock-on effect on others in the same role.
“Because just picking and choosing when you want to play for England is actually disrupting other number 10s like Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White, like Fulham's Josh King, who might want to play for England. So let's have it from Cole Palmer. Do you want to play for England or do you not want to play for England?”
In the studio, Jamie O’Hara backed the sentiment, going as far as to suggest Palmer should have travelled to link up with the national team regardless, even if that meant going against medical advice.
While the debate rages, England move on without him. The Nations League games are significant, the opposition unforgiving, and the margin for error thin. Gibbs-White and Garner now step into a camp that had been shaped with Palmer in mind.
Palmer, meanwhile, stays at Cobham, using the international break to recover and reset before Chelsea’s next Premier League fixture. His club will welcome the rest. The country, though, is left wondering where he truly stands in the long-term picture of the national team.
