Cole Palmer and Manchester United Duo Likely to Withdraw from England Squad Amid Injury Concerns

Cole Palmer from Chelsea is expected to withdraw from the upcoming England squad, dealing a blow to coach Thomas Tuchel. Despite Tuchel recently urging Palmer to prove his worth after being left out of the World Cup squad, the 24-year-old appears focused on preserving his fitness for the long term.

Palmer played the full 90 minutes in Chelsea's 3-0 loss to Brentford but will now prioritize load management over international duty. Alongside him, Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo are also doubtful for the Nations League matches following their 1-1 draw with Fulham.

Injury Issues Affecting Key Players

  • Marcus Rashford: Managing a persistent hip problem that has needed careful attention since the World Cup; he was substituted in the 77th minute against Fulham.
  • Kobbie Mainoo: Though part of the World Cup squad, he did not play during the tournament and is now coping with injury after playing 80 minutes at Craven Cottage.

Tuchel's Expectations and Alonso's Support

Tuchel sent a clear message to Palmer about earning his spot. He emphasized the need for Palmer to show strong performances to keep his place in the squad. The coach noted Palmer’s recent run of four goals and two assists in seven games as justification for recall but insisted the player must maintain high standards.

"It is one thing to be nominated, like with Cole, and getting your ticket back in the squad but it is another thing to perform for England," Tuchel said. "Cole needs to step up when he comes and he needs to show these kinds of numbers to get his place, keep his shirt and justify the nomination."

Tuchel added, "He has his numbers back, he has his assists back, he has decisive goals back. I think he has a point to prove, and the same goes for Trent [Alexander-Arnold]. It is his chance to show up and be the best version of himself."

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso supports Palmer’s cautious approach. Alonso said, "Sometimes you need to go through a difficult moment with an injury or whatever to learn from that. Cole has gone through a tough period with injury, and now he's working hard to prevent those symptoms from returning."

Managing Fitness After Injury Setbacks

Palmer’s choice to skip the international break reflects a strategy to avoid aggravating injuries after a challenging 2025-26 season plagued by thigh and hamstring problems. He appeared 34 times across competitions, including 24 Premier League starts, scoring 11 goals and assisting three times but struggled to stay fully fit.

His improved form under Alonso has been encouraging for Chelsea. Yet, this decision signals a focus on long-term health rather than immediate international appearances. With just two goals in 14 senior caps, Palmer may have to wait longer to secure a regular spot in Tuchel’s lineup.

England’s Demanding Nations League Schedule

Without Palmer, Rashford, and Mainoo, England faces a tough stretch of four Nations League matches in three weeks. Tuchel’s squad will host reigning World Cup champions Spain at Wembley on September 26, then travel to Prague to play the Czech Republic on September 29, followed by a trip to face Croatia on October 3.

The international window ends with a home match against the Czech Republic at Wembley on October 6. Tuchel will have to rely on alternative players as he navigates this intense fixture list to try to secure positive results.
