Colwill's Header Boosts Cardiff's Goal Threat

Joel Colwill walked off the pitch with a sore neck and a growing reputation. On his first Championship start, the 21-year-old climbed to glance in a crucial header and drag Cardiff City away from the brink of a third straight defeat in a 1-1 draw with Stoke City.

It was only one goal. Barry-Murphy thinks it should be the start of many.

“It was a great finish and very important for us – he carries a big goal threat,” said the Cardiff boss, who watched his side improve dramatically once Colwill was pushed higher up the pitch after the break.

Colwill, who hit seven goals last season, became the heartbeat of Cardiff’s second-half response. He didn’t just equalise; he almost won it. One sharp move, one clean strike, and the post denied him a match-winning brace.

“You saw he got close to another goal. His movement in the box in the second half, particularly, was very good,” Barry-Murphy said, underlining exactly why he wants the youngster operating closer to goal.

The tactical tweak told its own story.

“Joel played a little bit too deep in the first half, but in the second half he was very good, very close to Yousef [Salech],” Barry-Murphy explained. “A lot of our best moments in the box, he was on the premises, which is a big part of his role for the team.”

Cardiff’s attacking threat grew as Colwill stepped into those pockets around Salech, arriving late in the area, sniffing out loose balls, unsettling Stoke’s back line. The equaliser felt like a reward for that intent as much as the finish itself.

All this came with a notable absentee. Joel’s older brother, Rubin Colwill, watched on after failing to recover from an ankle problem.

“Rubin’s ankle wasn’t OK yesterday. He didn’t train,” said Barry-Murphy. “There was talk of putting him on the bench, but I wasn’t sure he would be fully fit if he was to come on.

“That was also the case on Saturday, and I didn’t want to risk it because of what he’s been through with the ankle.”

Cardiff are still searching for their first Championship win of the campaign, and the margin for error is already shrinking. Barry-Murphy is hopeful Rubin will be available for Saturday’s trip to Bolton, when the Bluebirds will again look to the Colwill brothers – one returning, one emerging – to turn promise into three points.
