Daniel Maldini walked off the pitch in Bergamo as Cagliari’s match-winner on Saturday night. By dawn on Sunday, he was at the centre of a frightening car crash on the streets of Milan.
The incident, reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, unfolded at around 5:15 a.m. at the junction of Via Tolentino and Via Francesco Caracciolo, only hours after Maldini had converted the decisive penalty in Cagliari’s victory over Atalanta.
From penalty hero to crash victim in a few hours
The quiet early-morning streets became the scene of a chaotic three-car collision. Two vehicles first collided at the intersection, before the force of the impact sent one of them careening into a parked Mercedes SUV in a residents’ bay.
Emergency services moved quickly. Three ambulances and a medical car were dispatched, with six people reported to have suffered minor injuries. Five were taken to hospital for checks.
Maldini was transported to Fatebenefratelli Hospital as a precaution. The scare was real, but the outcome mercifully routine.
“After a brief checkup with a code blue at the emergency room, Daniel was immediately released and returned home. He is in good health,” his lawyer, Danilo Buongiorno, said. “Daniel is fine and has not suffered any injuries, let alone serious ones.”
Police reconstruct the collision
Local authorities are now piecing together exactly how the crash unfolded. Early indications suggest a car travelling along Via Caracciolo struck Maldini’s vehicle as it emerged from Piazza Caneva.
Investigators believe Maldini’s car failed to yield the right of way, leading to a collision between the front left of his vehicle and the front right of the oncoming car. The secondary impact then pushed that first vehicle into the stationary Mercedes SUV.
No serious injuries, no lasting physical damage. Just twisted metal, shaken nerves and a long morning of statements and checks.
