Dante and Keyhanfar to Lead Bayern Munich's U23 Revolution
Bayern Munich are turning to a familiar face and a rising coaching mind to lead their next generation.
Dante, the cult hero of the treble-winning side under Jupp Heynckes, is expected to take over Bayern’s U23s this summer and begin his coaching career in Munich’s academy. Alongside him, German-Iranian coach Keyhanfar will arrive as part of a new partnership in the youth setup, giving the club’s second team a distinctly modern touchline profile.
For Dante, 42, it marks a return to the club where he became a serial winner. The Brazilian centre-back made 133 competitive appearances for Bayern between 2012 and 2015, collecting three Bundesliga titles, three DFB-Pokals and the Champions League. He is still playing at the top level with OGC Nice in Ligue 1, but the path is now clearly laid out: boots off, tactics board on.
He steps into the role held by Holger Seitz, a long-serving figure in the club’s academy structure. Seitz, 51, has guided the second team since 2020, with only a brief interruption, and famously steered them to the Regionalliga title in 2018/19. His work with Bayern’s youngsters has earned him a new role within the club, opening the door for a fresh coaching ticket on the U23 bench.
That is where Keyhanfar comes in. A coach who never waited for retirement to start learning the trade, he pushed his playing career as far as the Oberliga, hanging up his boots in 2019. By then, he was already deep into coaching.
His route has been anything but provincial. From SV Gonsenheim he moved into Mainz 05’s U19 setup, then crossed the border in 2020 to join Red Bull Salzburg’s reserve side, FC Liefering – a club renowned for grooming both players and coaches for the elite level. After Austria came a return to Mainz, this time on the staff under Bo Svensson, followed by a spell at Union Berlin. Along the way, he even shadowed Jürgen Klopp, adding another layer to a football education built around pressing, structure and detail.
Since the end of 2024, Keyhanfar has been out of work, waiting for the right project. Bayern’s call offers exactly that: a platform at one of Europe’s most demanding academies, and a chance to help shape a U23 side that bridges the gap between campus and Allianz Arena.
The pairing of Dante and Keyhanfar brings together two different football lives. One, a Champions League winner returning as a rookie coach. The other, a career coach who has climbed methodically through youth systems and data-driven clubs. Bayern are betting that this blend of charisma, experience and tactical schooling will give their second team a sharper edge.
For a club that prides itself on building from within, the next wave of Bayern talent will now grow up under a man who has lifted the biggest trophies in the game and a coach who has studied some of Europe’s most progressive benches. The standard for breaking through has rarely been higher.
