David Alaba's Future: Father Confirms Growing Interest Worldwide
David Alaba is between chapters, not at the end of the book. That’s the message from his father and adviser, George Alaba, as the former Bayern Munich and Real Madrid star weighs up his future as a free agent.
“There have been numerous enquiries. In the USA, in Europe, everywhere,” George told Austrian outlet Kronen Zeitung, making it clear that his son is not short of options. Any talk of an early curtain call on a glittering career? He brushed it aside. “It will continue, I know that. He will carry on.”
Real Madrid decided not to extend the defender’s deal beyond the summer after a run of serious injuries. At 34, Alaba has been without a club since his contract at the Bernabéu expired, but his status on the market is obvious: a Champions League‑winning, title‑laden defender available on a free.
Interest has started to swirl. Union Berlin have been loosely linked, while Mexican giants Club América have also been mentioned as a possible destination. So too has a romantic return to his boyhood club Austria Wien, a move that would resonate deeply in his home country.
A decision is not far away. “He will announce soon what happens next. He is doing excellently,” George Alaba said, sounding relaxed rather than rushed. On Austria Wien’s push, he added: “David has had calls. They want to, he wants to as well, but at the moment it is a little too early for him. He still has a lot he wants to do in football.”
That last line matters. It suggests Alaba is not ready to drift gently into the twilight. He still sees a runway ahead of him, not just a farewell tour.
A career built on trophies
Alaba’s résumé backs up the global interest. Between 2008 and 2021, he belonged to Bayern Munich, aside from a one‑year loan at TSG Hoffenheim. In Munich he became a cornerstone of an era: 431 competitive appearances, 33 goals, 55 assists, and a trophy cabinet that includes two Champions League titles among a stack of domestic honours.
From there he moved to Real Madrid, stepping straight into another superclub environment. Injuries increasingly restricted his minutes in Spain, particularly towards the end, but he still lifted the Champions League trophy twice more with Los Blancos.
His last competitive club appearance came in May, in Real’s 4–2 win over Athletic Club. He also featured for Austria at the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, underlining that, when fit, he remains central for his national team.
Now the question hangs over the game: where does a player with Alaba’s pedigree, versatility and experience go next? Europe again, a new adventure in North America, a bold move to Mexico, or a homecoming in Vienna?
The enquiries are there. The body, his father insists, is ready. The next decision will say a lot about how long David Alaba plans to stay at the top.
