Edmond Tapsoba Emerges as Top Target for Premier League Clubs
Edmond Tapsoba has moved to the top of several Premier League shortlists, with Manchester United, Tottenham and Newcastle all circling the Bayer Leverkusen defender this summer.
The 27-year-old Burkina Faso international has drawn sustained interest from England in recent weeks, and the situation is beginning to sharpen. TEAMtalk understands United have already opened talks with the centre-back’s camp, testing the waters over a potential move.
Tottenham and Newcastle are not standing back. Both clubs are keeping close contact as they weigh up how aggressively to move for a player seen as an instant upgrade to their defensive options.
Leverkusen, though, are in no mood to be pushed around. The newly crowned Bundesliga powerhouses have set a firm valuation of €50m (£42.8m / £58.4m) for one of the pillars of their back line. Tapsoba signed a contract extension earlier this year that runs all the way to 2031, and that deal gives the German champions serious leverage.
They would rather keep him. They also know every player has a price.
Tapsoba has built that status over four-and-a-half consistent years in Germany. Since arriving from Vitoria Guimaraes in 2020, he has become a fixture at the heart of Leverkusen’s defence, racking up 270 appearances in all competitions and contributing 13 goals. Strong in duels, quick across the ground and comfortable stepping into midfield to start attacks, he is widely viewed as one of the most complete centre-backs in the Bundesliga.
That blend of physicality and composure on the ball has made him a natural fit in the eyes of Premier League recruiters, who believe his game matches the pace and intensity of English football.
For now, United are understood to be the most advanced in their pursuit. Their early contact has put them slightly ahead in the race, but the presence of Tottenham and Newcastle ensures this is no formality. Any club wanting to land Tapsoba will have to navigate Leverkusen’s price tag, the length of his contract and the competition of rivals who are just as desperate to reinforce at centre-back.
The transfer window still has weeks to run, and this is a saga with room to twist. One thing is already clear: Edmond Tapsoba has become one of the most coveted defensive options on the market, and whoever blinks first may decide where he is marshalling a back line when the new season kicks off.
