Newcastle United Pursue Galatasaray's Wilfried Singo

Newcastle United have spent the summer looking ahead, stockpiling young talent for the seasons to come. The rebuild has been deliberate, targeted, almost methodical. But with the window closing on Sept. 1, there is still one area they keep circling back to: central defence.

Amar Dedic is already through the door, brought in to tighten up the right side of Matthias Jaissle’s back line. He fits the brief: energetic, progressive, long-term. Yet Newcastle’s name keeps surfacing next to centre-backs across Europe, a clear sign the club know this defence is not finished.

Now a new name has moved to the front of the rumour mill.

Newcastle test Galatasaray resolve for Singo

Turkish outlet Fanatik reported on Tuesday that Newcastle have made a bold move for Galatasaray defender Wilfried Singo, tabling a €40 million (£34.5 million) offer for the Ivory Coast international.

“Newcastle United, a Premier League team, has officially entered the race for the 25-year-old versatile player,” Fanatik wrote, citing Turkish newspaper Sabah. According to the report, the English club have “allegedly approached Galatasaray with a record-breaking transfer fee offer of 40 million euros.”

Record-breaking in a Turkish context, and a statement of intent from Newcastle if confirmed.

Singo only arrived in Istanbul last summer, joining Galatasaray from Monaco for around €30 million (£25.9 million). One season on, that reported bid would already hand the Turkish champions a sizeable profit and underline how quickly his stock has risen.

Galatasaray, though, are not acting like a club eager to cash in.

Galatasaray hold out for bigger payday

The same reports in Turkey suggest the Istanbul giants are pushing back. The figure they have in mind is closer to €60 million (£51.3 million), a fee that would turn a strong piece of business into a spectacular one after just a single campaign.

“Galatasaray management is not rushing into a decision regarding the star central defender, who has a long-term contract with the club until 2030,” Fanatik added.

That contract length gives Galatasaray leverage. There is no looming deadline, no pressure to sell. If Newcastle want Singo, they may have to pay a premium.

This is not a sudden obsession either. Newcastle have tracked Singo before. The Magpies were first linked with him more than a year ago when he was still at Monaco, at a time when his market valuation sat at around €25 million — slightly higher than the current €23 million figure.

The interest has survived a transfer, a new league, and a jump in price. That persistence says plenty.

Versatility versus value

On the pitch, the attraction is obvious. Singo can operate both as a central defender and at right back, a profile that would hand Jaissle genuine flexibility as he reshapes an ageing back line.

With Dedic now in the building and existing options already covering those roles, Singo would arrive as competition and cover rather than an undisputed starter on day one. That is where the debate sharpens.

Is €40 million a smart outlay for a player who strengthens two positions but does not obviously walk into either? Or does that same versatility justify the fee in a season where depth could define Newcastle’s campaign?

Galatasaray’s stance suggests any deal will not come cheap. Newcastle’s reported opening gambit has set the stage. The next move, and the price they are truly willing to reach, will reveal how urgently they feel this defence still needs one more pillar.
